Romney has a Hispanic voter issue

Romney seems to be.....not so popular with the Hispanic vote. In some states he trails by almost 40 points in that demographic.

Now some of this might just be the whole rich very white Mormon thing. But I suspect lots of it is also a general Hispanic backlash against the GOP which continues to gnash and wail about illegal immigration despite numbers that show illegal immigration to be at near historic lows. If that is the case then there might not be anything Romney can do about this.

But that is not interesting to talk about. So what are his options here? Hispanic VP? Taking a stand on key immigration legislation? Mollifying his views on foreclosures?

The similar thread on Romney has a female voter problem, turned out to be not so true.

With BO coming out in favor of Gay marriage, that may not sit so well with Hispanics.
Some Latinos may well have second thoughts, particularly voters cross-pressured by the Catholic church’s aggressive opposition to gay marriage.

“Hispanics who are less committed to Obama and are otherwise upset because they feel he broke his promise to pass immigration reform in his first year in office might have one other reason to give [Romney] a look,” said Whit Ayres, a Republican pollster. Privately, some Democratic strategists share that view.

Add to that the indications that Rubio might be the VP and he may in fact do quite well with the Hispanic vote.

Romney knows it's trouble. He's shied away from taking a position on immigration. I guess his position is "evolving".

Rubio will only help among the Cubano population. That is a critical voting block in Florida, but they do not have the same issues as the Mexican-Americans in the west, who vastly out-number them.

You forgot the 'Hispanic gang bangers who will try to kill you' in your patronizing list of racial sterotypes.

What the hell is that about?
You've put Americans of Cuban heritage, and Americans of Mexican heritage in pigeonholes, which are just as inaccurate and polemic as your earier rants against Hispanics being gangbangers who need to be shot before they can kill you.

Remaining silent while people parrot those media cliches and agit-prop soundbites is simply enabling them.

Cow cookies. The Dream Act, which would give an easy path to citizenship for children brought here illegally by their parents ebfore they had any say in the matter doesnot matter to the Cubanos. Trade with or embargo against Cuba is not important to an unemployed worker in the barrio in California, or some legitimate landscaping contractor being stopped by one of Arpio's goons just because he looks like an illegal immigrant.

Further, I never expressed any desire to shoot Hispanic gang-bangers.

I will fire up a car load of white nationalists who seem to be looking for trouble. A couple of them owe me for a very bad night a few years back.

I'm not so sure. Rubio is a Hispanic. A Romney/Rubio ticket will not likely simply narrowly focus on Cuban immigrants and their issues, but will try to appeal to a broader Hispanic base.

It is not sterotyping to point out that Cubans have different issues than Mexicans and other south-of-the-border Hispanics. For one thing, they tend to be much more anti-communist and pro-business. No, not all, but those are some general trends.

It won't be Rubio. He has a corruption problem. Also, he has a "lied on his bio" problem. If there's one thing Romney doesn't need, it's two candidates on his ticket who can't tell truth from lies.

Consistency is something that Romney will avoid like the plague - again.

I think he's pretty much screwed on the issue of immigration specifically. That's because the Tea Party keeps flexing their muscle in GOP primaries, ejecting Republicans like Dick Lugar because they are not conservative enough. So you'd better believe the Tea Party is going to keep pushing hard right on these issues, especially in the Southwest. So Romney has to appease these folks.

But then there's the question of the Hispanic vote, which Romney absolutely needs to have a chance at winning enough electoral votes in some states (I'm thinking New Mexico, Florida, and possibly even Nevada). However, by attempting to appease the Tea Party, he'll further alienate the Hispanic population.

Methinks this is precisely why Romney is now adopting his waffling "I'm working on where I stand on immigration" stance now; he's basically trying to figure a way out of this mess.

Really? This is the first I've heard of these things about Rubio. Do you have any sources on that?
