Expelled from college for watching "Glee"

Ha! I heard that one from my Dad when he said they wanted to re-named his alma mater the Southern Halifax Institute of Technology.

But, seriously, how is it that this could come as a surprise to a guy attending an overtly fundamentalist school?

Well, I suppose if he's really that stupid, it would explain why he didn't make it into any other schools....

Never heard Dalhousie called that before.

Do not worry Gleeks, for I shall defend thee from the h8ers!

Yes, Glee is ridiculous on just about any level. It's also served as a terrific medium in my family to get our kids even more interested in music, to help them recognize bullying and bigotry and envision ways out of it, to begin to identify appropriate boundaries of sexual behavior when the time comes, and, as mentioned, to illustrate for them that the most important thing about gay people is not the "gay" it's the "people." Not that it's one big public service announcement, it's a soap opera like any other, but it's also contains flashes of great humor and some terrific vocal performances.

For those who've just scratched the surface I can see that you would find it insufferable. (I did for a long time 'til my wife dragged me in.) But like many things, once you invest in it you can find a lot more there to appreciate.

Never watched Glee until I was stuck in a French hotel room with a broken leg and Glee was the only English language program on*. Yes it's ridiculous but it is entertaining and does address some major issues in a sympathetic way.

* - of course I was happy to watch French TV, I only had Glee on to humour Mrs Don ;)

This case is telling. These religious conservatives claim their religion is the vanguard of freedom in the West. Yet, when they actually get power to shape something the way they want, it ends up looking like a totalitarian police state.

Are you surprised?

You must have had a very sheltered life.

I loved Glee for two seasons. Then the soap opera drama just got too much for me. But I loved the musical numbers. The lesbian cheer leaders didn't hurt either.

A friend of mine just got back yesterday from visiting her daughter at Pepperdine University (another Christian type college), and she was distraught! She said her daughter had always been headstrong about her future career, but what she had become at this college was a "Stepford Wife". The professors apparently told the daughter to forget about taking hardcore courses, and to take easy ones, and courses that might prepare her for a subservient life and a good Christian mother and wife.

I wondered why my friend would even have wanted her daughter to go there in the first place, I guess it was because it seemed like a "Cleaner" college, not a rowdy type of university. Oh well, she thought it was a good idea at the time...

What planet is America on? Oh wait, the same one as contains the Taliban and Afghanistan. Soulmates, or what?

Rolfe.

Glee is a neat show.

I'm aware of these sort of totalitarian schools. A good friend of mine went to one.

I went to an evil secular university.

No doubt the "Conservatives" who rail against Speech Codes and Political Correctness will not mention this incident.

You know in my numerous readings of the Bible I have yet to find the verse that says "Go now and force all people to follow these rules" yet from the way it seems a lot if not most of the conservative christians out there behave, you'd think it was in there somewhere.

It is stunningly amazing to me that so many people don't seem to realise that Christianity is about getting your life right with God, not trying to do it with everyone else's, and that you simily can't force it onto anyone else. What is even more stunning to me is that those same people seem to be so willing to try to do just that.

All I have to say is: Stanford Prison Experiment.

I would imagine that the 613 commandments with their accompanying draconian punishments would suffice. Obviously the relationship between the Torah and New Testament is fuzzy at best, but Jesus seemed to think the Law applied to him and his followers.

Nobody really knows what Christianity is "about," a product of it being based on moldy old books that demonstrate "authority" rather than evidence. The topic has been fought about ad nauseam for 2000 years, and it won't be decided anytime soon.
