Popocatepetl may erupt

There are communities near the volcano that may be in danger and could be evacuated, but Mexico City itself is 40 miles away.

I've been to Mexico City and if there is a major eruption millions of people could die.

I guess it depends on how major or minor the eruption will be, but it's not out of the realm of possibility that millions could die.

If it goes like Krakatoa it'd be a MESS
We would more likely see a St Helens-type eruption. Krakatoa had sea water leaking into underground chambers, which caused a massive steam explosion. Not thast much water available underground around Popocatepetl.

I would worry more about pyroclastic flow or a lahar if the snowcap starts to melt and flow and mix with old ash.

Pycroclastic flows and large ash clouds could do a whole lot of damage to Mexico City, despite its distance.

<-----No geology

If it's anything like a pinata, it'll be spouting candy!

But probably, not. Probably nasty burning stuff.

Remember that steam is 200 times the volume of the water!

The local creatards in the office are using this as proof, somehow, that the end is nigh. Got to get right with Gawwwwwwwwd.

Not surprising. I bet people are also tying it to Mayan end-of-the-world crap.

It is one of those things that though it has a small (but real) chance of happening, the consequences if it does are appalling.
I have no issue with realistic concern. Clearly a massive mudflow or pyroclastic flow threatens a lot of people. But the OP wording struck me as typical ITEOTWAWKI excess.

A factoid like that sticks in my head, yet I must have my email calendar give me reminders about my childrens birthdays.

You'd think I couldn't get that wrong, playing with steam engines all my life...

But really you don't compute that to run one - you make sure everything is oiled and that the crown sheet is always wet.
