The Incredible odds of fulfilled bible prophecy

DOC, if you see the Book of Jonah as being historical, do you accept the following as true?

1) Jonah was swallowed by a great fish, in which he lived for three days.

2) Nineveh was so large it took three days to cross it.

DOC: I would like an answer to question 2 at least. I'll let question 1 go, as it could be explained as a miracle. However, if you go here and scroll down a bit you will find a map of Nineveh and will see that it is about 5 kilometers long, north to south, and, about 2 or 3 kilometers at its widest portion east to west. A kilometer is less than a mile. I know, as a hiker, that one can make about 15 miles a day. So, a city three days journey across would be about 45 miles at its widest point. Since 1 mile = 1.609344 kilometers; or, to round off, there's about 1.6 kilometers per mile. Thus, a city 45 mile across at its widest point would have to be a bit over 70 kilometers, whereas Nineveh, at 5 K, was only 1/14th. that.

So, how do you reconcile the physical remains with the Book of Jonah, particularly if you insist the book was historical?

Jonah had really short legs?
The streets were really windy?
He got lost easily?
He stopped at every tavern, just for one drink, but got talking and well, you know..?

Maybe one side effect of being inside a big fish for days is that you lose all sense of direction?

OK, I give up. I bet if DOC ever answers your question he'll come up with something crazier than I ever could.

Sounds like whoever wrote that story never been there for themselves and imagined this huge grand city that would take about half a week to travel on foot.

Hysterical yes. Historical, no. I'm looking forward to Doc's explanation of this one.

Add me to that list.

Oh, and is there a guest list? In that case, add me to that as well, please. Please?
carlito + 1 - "I'm on the list." "It's OK, I'm with the band." "The manager is a close friend."

Good point. Were the writers the Judean equivalent of country folk?

Part of gods' punishment to Nineveh was to shrink it in size or it could be that god stretched the truth.

That's one interpretation. Another is that it is another failed prophecy in a long list of failed biblical prophecies.

...Please note that you are repeating information that has already been discussed. Your revision of your post gives the impression that this is new ground, which is completely not true.

And you are giving the false impression that all the prophecies in my link have been discussed -- they haven't. When you continue to make general wide sweeping comments that give no new information that gives me the right to counter with my past posts that have not been completely addressed. You should just let the posts stand for themselves and then I won't have to respond to your wide sweeping no new information posts.

I'll try by next Wednesday to give some of Billy Graham's comments on the prophetic Book of Revelation.

I went with my parents (who were atheists) to see Billy Graham when he visited Glasgow in, I think, 1955. I can't remember what he said, but I don't think it was about the prophetic book of Revelation.

I'd like to see his comments on my favourite passage:
14:10 The same shall drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is poured out without mixture into the cup of his indignation; and he shall be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels, and in the presence of the Lamb: 11 And the smoke of their torment ascendeth up for ever and ever: and they have no rest day nor night, who worship the beast and his image, and whosoever receiveth the mark of his name.
Some Lamb!

Got it, Robotimbo!

Still, no one convinced of a single fulfilled prophecy.

This thread is not about my personal beliefs or opinions.

O yes it is. You are of the opinion that bible prophecies are valid, we are of the opinion that they have all failed. The evidence is irrefutable, they have all failed.

To help you better understand the Book of Revelation.
Well, that's a bit presumptuous.

Especially given the fact that your brand of biblical interpretation includes abuse of pronouns and near random post doc claims of translational difficulty.
