DOC, if you see the Book of Jonah as being historical, do you accept the following as true?
1) Jonah was swallowed by a great fish, in which he lived for three days.
2) Nineveh was so large it took three days to cross it.
DOC: I would like an answer to question 2 at least. I'll let question 1 go, as it could be explained as a miracle. However, if you go here and scroll down a bit you will find a map of Nineveh and will see that it is about 5 kilometers long, north to south, and, about 2 or 3 kilometers at its widest portion east to west. A kilometer is less than a mile. I know, as a hiker, that one can make about 15 miles a day. So, a city three days journey across would be about 45 miles at its widest point. Since 1 mile = 1.609344 kilometers; or, to round off, there's about 1.6 kilometers per mile. Thus, a city 45 mile across at its widest point would have to be a bit over 70 kilometers, whereas Nineveh, at 5 K, was only 1/14th. that.
So, how do you reconcile the physical remains with the Book of Jonah, particularly if you insist the book was historical?
