I think that somewhere in the distant past something was said about a close range front shot from a 9mm must cause a person to land on their back.

Now the claim seems to be that it could never happen that the victim would do so, as opposed to 'it is possible' for someone who was shot to fall backwards.

Ah. Well someone might well reel backwards after being shot, but it isn't because of the force of the bullet making them do so.
 
Bullets do not knock people down, except in cases where the bullet ejects material from the body, in which case the ejected material acts as an action causing the body to react in the opposite direction.

People who are hit with bullets fall down because they are gravely injured and in shock.

The 'force' being equal and the effect being equal are very relevant. The latter claim is not valid because the force in recoil is dealt with.

This is wrong. You'll recall the Derion Albert murder, which pulled in not only Jesse Jackson, but got far more action from Attorney General Holder and President Obama than this case has to date. And the efforts to turn down in black communities have been ongoing for decades now - they just don't get any notice in national media, because they aren't really news.

"They" say someone is dead, so someone has to get charged for it. Screw self-defense. Ain't no such a thang. Screw the cops' statement. Everybody knows them cops have an agenda. And everyone knows that agenda is pure EVIL.

But me, I'm going to be a contrarian and put my money on the police statement to the effect that there is no basis on which to charge Zimmerman. I have no reason to suspect a cop agenda here. Cops have nothing to gain by whitewashing Zimmerman. I do, OTOH, have reason to suspect agendas on the part of Jesse Jackson, the New Black Panthers, and Leftysergeant & co.

If people were inert bags of sand, it would defy physics for a bullet to knock them down, much less back.

Because people are more like bundles of bones, ropes, and liquid, wrapped in a couple of casings, with the heaviest part at the top, and a small unstable center of gravity...

It would be possible for *a* bullet to have the effect of putting *a* person down on their back.

It would require several factors to work together.

You're way off base here tri. It simply doesn't happen. Center of gravity has nothing to do with it. Those deer weigh much less than an average person, and were hit with a high-power round with more than 5 times the force of a 9mm handgun round. The physics is the same whether it's a deer or a person.

Oh, if a person is sufficiently off balance then any impetus might be enough to tip 'em over. In general though, people fall down when shot because of shock or tissue/bone damage.

Probably the biggest reason why deer don't fall over as much as people do [when they've been shot] is that deer don't realize "oh drat, I've been shot and may have been terminally injured" in the same way humans do and therefore don't immediately fall over due to shock.

That was a sad case. We'll be needing all the honor students we can get to make it to the middle of this century in one piece. And all those of a similar mindset to Albert's killers will be no good for themselves or anyone else.

If anything, the effect would be much stronger when wearing body armor because the bullet is stopped cold, the body absorbs 100% of the force. Without body armor the bullet may pass right on through, and still has some of its force upon exit.
