HMB Endeavour

I read this,

Yes, terrific photos.

It became a tradition to take the other kids to see Cook's Cottege (his parent's cottage by memory - I don't think he actually lived there) in the Fitzroy Gardens whenever a child as born as the maternity hospital was just across the road. I got to know the cottage very well.........

And thought, surely lionking doesn't think.......................? Then I read this,

No! Captain Cook is our guy! You can't have him.

From art and realised that you Antipodeans have some kind of belief that you have a claim to a man born, bred and brought up in the UK, who happened to visit your way a few times, as well as the then US, Hawaii, Canada and Newfoundland).

I'm afraid to tell you, you can't have him and to further inform you that the English can't have him either. As his father was from Kelso that makes him, by descent, a Scot, so put him down and hand him over.

But Yorkshire Trumps the lot.

You can always tell a Yorkshireman ...

But not a lot.

Love it. I particularly like the sides of the ship for some reason - the deep, rich, lacquered wood...

Yeah, it does also seem strange to think that the a man was from a place he "discovered". As though Christopher Columbus was from America and William Herschell was from Uranus.

Nice piccies!

I visited the Cutty Sark in Greenwich (the real one) with my daughter some years ago before it burned down ;).

While we were below decks admiring the collection of bowsprits , her cell phone (aka her mobile) rang. It was her husband calling from Tokyo. Severe temporal stress resulted.

For anyone interested - the event that sparked Cook's great expedition, the transit of Venus will occur on June 5th and 6th this year. This will be only the four time it has happened since Cooks time (1769)

Maybe he just meant the people on the boat were saying something untrue when they were guiding you round.
Not necessarily anyone lying. Probably just mistaken. Folk etymology is a difficult thing to disabuse people of.

Anyway, can't match the Endeavour for size (although she was from Whitby), this is the Grand Turk, also in Whitby (at the time):

Didn't get any really good pictures on the day, but the rigging is quite impressive:

She was built, I believe, for the Horatio Hornblower TV series, but has since mainly been used as a tourist attraction and for corporate jollies and the like. When we ventured below decks, we did find one crewmember asleep in his hammock:

The Endevour was in Philly a few years back. I went on board and took some pictures - I was still using a film camera so I guess that was about 12 years ago or so. I just found those photos a few days ago. Wonder if I should scan them....

The Turk was built for use in TV and Movies, Hornblower used it.
It 'lived' in Whitby for a few years but was sold to a Frenchman last year and has departed for the Med.

Thanks, all! Nice photos, Rat.

Now, then. Stop this silliness! Captain Cook is mine! My grandma said we are related to him, so m'nerrrr! :p :D ;)

Cool! Go on. Pics are good.

Thanks for the info!

It will be visible here!

Edit: Hey, Kookbreaker, do you sell eclipse viewing glasses at your store?

I think you may need a small telescope to see it.

Oops, forgot to post this link:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transit_of_Venus#Observing

The safest way to observe a transit is to project the image of the Sun through a telescope, binoculars, or pinhole onto a screen, but the event can be viewed with the naked eye using filters specifically designed for this purpose, such as an astronomical solar filter with a vacuum-deposited layer of chromium, eclipse viewing glasses, or Grade 14 welder's glass.

I should mention here that it is perfectly legal to take pictures of people and use them however you like, so long as they aren't children. It is, however, usually polite to get their permission first. :)

This is incorrect. If a person is identifiable in an image, you must have their permission to use it for any purpose other than news reporting.

I don't think that is the Law in Australia. Especially not with tourist type snapshots like Orphia posted. It might apply to professional Film Crews shooting a Movie or TV Commercial, but not personal snaps. If it were so, Facebook and similar sites would be out of business.

Anyway it amazes me that Capt. Cook and his crew sailed that tiny ship around the world and made so many accurate maps over 200 years ago.

I doubt there was enough room to swing a cat in that thing...

Anyone got any evidence for what your rights are for taking photos in public? Here is mine
http://www.artslaw.com.au/info-sheets/info-sheet/street-photographers-rights/

It is generally possible to take photographs in a public place without asking permission. This extends to taking photographs of buildings, sites and people. There are, however, some limitations.

Photographing people

There are no publicity or personality rights in Australia, and there is no right to privacy that protects a person’s image. Existing privacy laws are more concerned with storage and management of personal information and are of limited relevance to the present issue.
The restrictions are not very important as long as you do not try to use them for commercial purposes. For example do not put a photo of a person in the photo competition without the subject's written permission.

What you're forgetting is that civil cases only ever arise if the complainant initiates a case. In 99.9% of such instances, the person won't even know their photo was taken, and because nothing was ever going to happen with the photo except personal use, there's no reason it would ever arise.

But let's say you took an amazing photo that you uploaded to Facebook without the person's permission, and Facebook then sold that photo to an advertising company who used it in conjunction with an STI education campaign, and the person in the photo encountered it.

That person would have the legal right to sue you, and would win.

Legally speaking, if anyone uploads a photo of you to their Facebook page or whatever, and you have an issue with it, Facebook is obliged to remove it, and the user who uploaded it has violated Facebook's terms and conditions.

Sites like Facebook get away with it because when you upload a photo you certify that you have all rights relating to the image, thus if there's ever a legal issue it's the user that has breached the law and not Facebook.
