I don't know if I called Roseanne and Alan Thicke serious backlash. And it's backlash from a world he choose to reject. He don't roll in those circles no more and the people he does roll with.... insanely religious people.... I'm sure they love the guy that much more.

I just don't get what these people thought Kirk Cameron would say about gay marriage. He's insanely religious. I think he had a TV show where he would try and convert people on the street.
 
Dear Mr. Cameron:

I realize that you're an important evangelical speaker, and what you have to say is extraordinarily important, but just a few things I'd like to mention.

A friend of mine just lost a family member to a horrible car crash. His young wife is now a widow in her 20's.

Another friend just lost his toddler child to Leukemia.

Another friend's mother is in the ICU, and is quite possibly in her final hours.

I've another whose wife just survived a horrible car wreck, and is lucky to be alive, much less walking.

I've friends who are destitute due to the actions of a relative who played them and then screwed them over. They have no phone, no heat, no nothing.

I've other friends who are enduring serious challenges in their lives.

Some are straight. Some are gay. All of us remain friends. We like that. We choose to stand together.

Mr. Cameron, I realize you're far more important than this old busted-up mutt trucker, but may I make one simple request of you?

STFU.

Quite frankly, Mr. Cameron, your hate marks you as an idiot.

I don't like idiots, Mr. Cameron. They annoy the hell out of me.

I know you're convinced you're smarter than the rest of us, but to be honest, I'll take genuine compassion from my friends, the ones who stand by me in various parts of the nation and the world, who kick my ass when I need it, but more often than not, are more than willing to listen to me, and give the wisdom they've gained over time. They help me, Sir. Far more than you realize.

Seriously. I value that.

I respect that.

I'm not a real important guy in the grand scheme of things. I'm just one busted-up mutt trucker.

But this trucker is grateful for the friends he's made. And he's grateful to share the minute time he gets with those friends.

Funny thing about all those things that make us different. It's worth more to me than anything else.

I'm a trucker. With a gay son. And I love my son, and when he finds someone who will be a soul mate, I will be grateful when my son is able to wed, and become part of something greater than himself.

And I will be even more grateful when he is able to leave behind people like you who choose to denigrate and disparage him. He does not deserve that.

You are hateful. And you are an idiot.

So, like I said. It's time to STFU.

But I take issue with one aspect. And that is that Mr Cameron is a hateful person. I never got that impression at all and I don't think it is one bit true.

I think it would be more appropriate to say his words inspire hateful people. Kids that may want to come out to their parents would probably feel terrible if they were watching that live. It certainly doesn't help say an openly gay teenager trying to navigate through school. Someone disapproving of their lifestyle doesn't help them at all.

But I can't agree he is hateful himself. I have heard plenty of Evangelicals who come off as incredibly hateful. But not Kirk.

Also... maybe Kirk might have a better chance of coming around if he is shown love.... and reminded of the consequences of his speech.

Margaret Court (former Australian tennis star - turned pastor) caused similar controversy recently when she claimed that all homosexuals "choose" their sexuality.

Unfortunately, it is impossible to find a church that takes Jesus seriously when he says, "Judge not lest ye be judged" (Matthew 7:1).

The consequences of his speech are his motivation. It's very hard to have a rational discussion, no matter how polite, with someone who has convinced themselves that a fictional and incredibly flexible creator is on their side. Once a person gets to that point, they've completely eliminated any need to support their position.

He may be polite and he may be more soft spoken when compared to other prominent figures but it, in no way, diminishes the hateful content of his speech.

I liked your post. But I didn't agree with this part. As far as child actors go Kirk Cameron turned out pretty darn good. I think one of the child actors from the show has since commit suicide. Tracy Gold was really messed up for a while... but she is ok now.... and there are really tonnes more child actors that did not fair nearly as well as Kirk. It kind of saddens me though.... he is as you say kind of nuts. I really think he could have had just a great acting career (I said earlier Tom Hanks like).

I pretty much disagree with you there. There are plenty of former child stars that turned out very well (and without the narrow-minded religious fundamentalism), they just don't get the same publicity. Even if we're just thinking about co-stars from Growing Pains, how about Leonardo DiCaprio? He has turned out to be a very accomplished actor who seems to have his life well in hand, with no big personal problems.

Nor do I think that Cameron could have had a great acting career. He got through Growing Pains based upon charm, good looks, and mugging for the camera. Compare his and DiCaprio's post-TV career. I've read some reviews of the Left Behind movies which said that Cameron hasn't learned a single thing about acting since Growing Pains.
