What's so fantastic about Apple?

But Apple may now have a problem they've really not had before and that is their millions upon millions of consumers may be unwilling to accept anything radically new, people don't like change!

If this is aimed at me I'll have you know, after much counseling, I'm completely over the change from "banter" to "community".

It could be a technical limitation of dropbox. It could be a technical limitation of iWorks apps. ...snip...

Apple's developers have demonstrated such skill over the years that I don't think there is any likelihood your speculations could be true.

And if it were the case that iWork does not support dropbox to force people to use iCloud, as you claim,

...snip...

I haven't gone and checked for myself but from what has been said in this thread about the apps if you want to use a cloud service from them you are forced to use Apple's offering.
Do you have special insight into apples business decisions that you don't have into the omni groups ?

Well yes - I've done quite a lot of work with Apple over the decades, I well remember the wilderness years when Apple would be chasing me around a convention trying to get me to commit to developing for Apple! (And I still have many contacts in Apple.)

But that aside you seem to not understand how this works, if I am talking about Apple I am not talking about another company. Let me reiterate my comments were about Apple and some of their products not a company called Omni and their products.

You claim to know absolutely why apple iworks does not work with dropbox, but you have no idea why omni group apps don't.

First part is an incorrect summary and the second part is a non sequitur.
Humor me. Give me your best guess. Could it be, hmm, i don't know, technical limitations ? Is that possible ?

Again Omni are not Apple, my comments about Apple apply to Apple, whether they also apply to Omni - I have no idea as I have no interest in this company that you seem obsessed with.

It seems to me apple completely revamped notifications in iOS5. So that claim fails.

If you think that equates to a restyling of the OS then I understand how your ignorance of software development means you can't follow my comments.
As to the usability : That which can be asserted without evidence, can be dismissed without evidence.

How true.

:)

But it is a very relevant point. Apple really haven't faced having to give the entrenched consumers a boot up their backside with a "paradigm" change. It was bad enough with the move from OS 9 to OSX with at that time their relatively small consumer base, these days the problems would be greatly magnified.

They have been making changes with multitouch gestures and making the OS more tablet like (Launchpad, App Store). I think they really want to change how we interact with our computer but are implementing it over several years instead of one big swoop.

My speculations were exactly that. Speculations - because I don't know why they have not integrated dropbox, and neither do you.

That's my understanding as well. I didn't think that from the app itself was the operative issue as much as the ability to sync over a cloud based service at all without jumping through hoops.
Again Omni are not Apple, my comments about Apple apply to Apple, whether they also apply to Omni - I have no idea as I have no interest in this company that you seem obsessed with.
It's not obsession, it's drawing a parallel between two 'office' suites, neither of which support dropbox. I think it's useful to understand why a similar app also would not support dropbox.

I think changing how notifications works is a fairly big change in the OS 'style'. Maybe I am not understanding what specific features/UI developments are encompassed by the term 'styling'. So please, help me correct my ignorance.

I have use android from about cupcake -> gingerbread fairly thoroughly . Can you you explain some of the major restyling that has been done in android over that period ? Screen shots even. AFAIK, AOSP has stayed stylistically fairly consistent.

I have only just started playing with ICS, and only on a tablet, so am not familiar enough to comment about that.

That change was twelve years ago! If you haven't gotten over it by now, you're not likely to.

This is what I'm expecting

iPad 3 (retina display, spec bumps, 4g, better cameras and maybe Siri)

1080p video from the iTunes store

New Apple TV, 1080p compatible, maybe Apps available for it.

Intro to iOS 5.1

What's a 'retina display' ?

What's a 'retina display' ?

It is in fact a marketing name.

I think the idea was that it represents the limits of human near vision (ie the ability of the retina to see detail). IOW, any attempt at finer resolution from that point becomes academic, since there would be no perceptible benefit.

I don't find my first gen iPad fuzzy in the least, but side-by-side photos of the image in Apple's latest announcement and a current iPad make the difference in resolution obvious.

Some people say that as "Retina display" was a term Apple made up, it can mean whatever it wants it to mean. If Apple wanted to, the theory goes, it could just declare the current iPad to be a Retina display and be done with it.
...
I think this argument is asinine. Firstly, although Apple invented the term out of whole cloth, it does offer a definition: "the Retina display's pixel density is so high, your eye is unable to distinguish individual pixels."
...
The precise phrase "Retina display" might belong to Apple but the advantages of high resolution screens do not. As this is an emerging trend across the whole industry, it behooves us to strip away the marketing pixie dust and take an objective look at what this technology can offer.

Just bought a Transformer Prime, can't wait to use it.

Faster, better, and NOT Apple.:D

I've been looking at those (and laptops/netbooks) a bit recently, but I need to step up my research.

My Lenovo (mentioned up-thread) is going to die. :(

I tripped on the cord a couple months ago and just this past week it no longer stays charging when pluged in. Gonna be a loosened connection on the MoBo and that would cost more than the thing is worth. Someone (John?) mentioned Apple's Mag-Safe connector as being useless, IIRC. Trust me... it's not.

Indeed it's not.
Not only does it stop accidents like the one you describe (I've also seen it avoid similar when a user's dog has caught the cable), but also when sat in the dark (I do that a lot) and the laptop needs plugging in to charge, you don't have to fiddle with the plug and socket, you just hold the cable somewhere near and it just goes where it needs to be on it's own. :)
