Not as a pre-requisite (at least, not in that article) but yes, if people wish to keep a landline phone that will remain on the cooper network for the time being. People like myself though that only use that line for internet, can look forward to saving that $22.95/month :)

Or, do you mean that in order to be eligible for these prices you must accept a telstra phone connection on top of it?

I will be ditching Telstra once I get the NBN (if the wreckers don't scrap it first) and go with a more competitive company.
I am sure other ISPs are more competitive.
This is another thing I like about the NBN, it is competitive. Don't listen to the B.S. from Abbott and the conservatives, plus shock jocks.

Oh yeah I certainly don't listen to their nonsense. There is a worry though that NBN Co would be sold off in the future, creating another monopoly.

As I suspected, they didn't tell the whole story. (After being on "naked DSL" for several years, I don't intend to subscribe to a POTS any time in the future).
 
Unfortunately, with Arbib's departure triggering a by-election and the status of the independents uncertain at best, I suspect we may have a General sooner than we think. Which I believe I predicted some time ago.

Chapter 1, Part II, Section 15 of the Australian Constitution:


If the place of a senator becomes vacant before the expiration of his term of service, the Houses of Parliament of the State for which he was chosen, sitting and voting together, or, if there is only one House of that Parliament, that House, shall choose a person to hold the place until the expiration of the term. But if the Parliament of the State is not in session when the vacancy is notified, the Governor of the State, with the advice of the Executive Council thereof, may appoint a person to hold the place until the expiration of fourteen days from the beginning of the next session of the Parliament of the State or the expiration of the term, whichever first happens.

Where a vacancy has at any time occurred in the place of a senator chosen by the people of a State and, at the time when he was so chosen, he was publicly recognised by a particular political party as being an endorsed candidate, a person chosen or appointed under this section in consequence of that vacancy, or in consequence of that vacancy and a subsequent vacancy or vacancies, shall, unless there is no member of that party available to be chosen or appointed, be a member of that party.​

By-elections are for the House of Representatives, not the Senate.

As it happens, NSW Labor is trying to get Bob Carr to take the job but he says he doesn't want it. I think he might just be holding out to see if he can score the Foreign Affairs portfolio.

You're right. I was going off an early news report that had clearly got it entirely wrong. I still think we'll get an early election though. :)

The papers, and in fact most commentators, are all over the place at the moment (being the rabid, howling pack that they are) although it's sad to think that the silly bastiges aren't even aware of the provisions of the bloody Constitution.

I think I'll wait until things settle down a bit, and see especially what effect Julia's reshuffle has before I put my bets on. At this stage, though, I certainly wouldn't try and argue too strongly against your prediction.

I would though. When the minority government was formed, I said it would be incredibly stable. None of the independents want to lose power they never had before and will never have again.
