This was before the rise of the Tea Party. Now I don't think a Republican like Kolbe would have a chance in hell of getting elected. Just look at how far to the right poor Romney has had to move in a futile attempt to placate the kook-base of the GOP.

Which is a sad commentary on just how far down the rabbit hole the GOP has slid.

Goldwater wouldn't have a chance in hell of getting elected. Hell, Wyatt Earp wouldn't be able to get on the ballot.

Reminds me of the "Onion" headline aobut the governor of NJ having a gay lover: "Gay man tearfully admits to being governor of NJ". I'd say a similar headline -- "gay man admits to being an Arizona sherrif" -- is rather appropriate, wouldn't you say?

I doubt if he's all that complex. Before all the gay marriage hysteria being a Republican homosexual wasn't such a stretch. Should they all be Democrats out of solidarity? No one expects heterosexuals to stick together.

Of course heterosexuals do not have major individuals from one of the two viable parties trying to criminalize their sexual relations.
