Arizona Gay Sheriff has sex with illegal immigrant

A bit of local news here.

A sheriff seeking the GOP nomination for an Arizona congressional seat was forced to confirm he is gay Saturday and resigned from presidential hopeful Mitt Romney's Arizona committee amid allegations of misconduct made by a man with whom he previously had a relationship.

Pinal County Sheriff Paul Babeu denied claims he tried to threaten the man, a Mexican immigrant and a former campaign volunteer, with deportation if their past relationship was made public...

Sheriff Paul Babeu is running for congress in Arizona.

His campaign website features videos of him speaking at this year's CPAC conference complaining about the federal government trampling on 2nd amendment rights and opposing Arizona's anti-immigration law.

Now it turns out that he had a gay lover who was also an illegal Mexican immigrant, and that he threatened this man with deportation unless he promised to keep their relationship a secret.

I don't know what else to say, except: :dl:
 
In this video interview with Hot Air, Babeu espoused a conspiracy theory regarding the botched Fast & Furious operation. It is true that Fast & Furious was a major screwup, but Babeu claims that Eric Holder and Obama actually did it on purpose to "destabilize" America so that he could then use it as a pretext to take away Americans 2nd Amendment rights.

 
I'm wondering now how important the Catholic vote is to Mittens in Arizona? Something tells me this may have a bit of a negative impact there.
 
It's Obama's fault!

Obviously if he had been enforcing federal immigration laws*, this wouldn't have happened!


*Federal enforcements are at all time historic record high levels.

There is also the failed conspiracy that Laughner was an Obama plot to kill Rep. Gifford's so that he could confiscate guns. Living in AZ and as a gun owner I know a lot of people here that think everything is a plot to get their guns. I swear they only buy gun safes to keep Obama from sneaking in and stealing their weapons.
 
This is the latest in AZ headfirst no holds barred race to the top of the laughing stock pile. Our governor writes insect cook books, our legislators want to bring radioactive material to our beautiful land, our senators are senile beyond comprehension, and our republican anti immigration sheriffs are having gay sex with illegal immigrants.

I could care less that he is gay and I hope this is a positive change for him. I also hope he didn't break any laws or abuse his powers in regards to an ex lover.

Funny, lame, sad, and offensive at the same time.

I admit that I don't really get the GOP Tea Party angle. I'm left to consider that maybe sex is more exciting when discovery of your personal life might ruin your career as a voice for a party that is deeply interested in your personal behavior.

The man's lawyer, Melissa Weiss-Riner, released a statement Saturday saying the man retained her firm's services because he was contacted by Babeu's attorney and "felt intimidated."...

Weiss-Riner earlier told the New Times that Babeu's attorney and campaign consultant falsely told her client that his visa had expired. Babeu told reporters he believed the man, identified only by his first name Jose, was living in the country legally.

The New Times posted a photo provided by the man of the two embracing. It also posted a cellphone self-portrait of a smiling Babeu in his underwear and another of what appears to be the shirtless sheriff in a bathroom, posted on a gay dating website. The man provided the magazine with photos of himself and Babeu and text messages between the two. Babeu didn't deny their authenticity.

I agree with this (except it's "couldn't care less") and I really regret that the Republican Party is so hostile to gays. He's essentially ruined as a Republican now, and that's just not fair. I know it seems odd that a gay person would even join the GOP, but people are complex and he may have thought that his conservative sympathies outweighed his concern for other gays. Whatever. I'm not criticizing him for being Republican any more than I'd criticize a straight person, and I think it is a darn shame that being "outed" means you can never have significant power in the GOP.

However, if the stories are true about him threatening his illegal immigrant lover with deportation, well, that is both a dereliction of duty and a despicable thing to do. But I don't know if they're true.
 
I do agree with Tricky on this but there is an aspect that he wanted to have it both ways that bugs me. If I were to run for office on a 'Bring Prayer to Schools' platform I'd have a better chance of winning, but it would say something about my character.

The fact is, there are no moderate Republicans in Arizona. Moderates are weeded out during the primary process in a systematic manner that includes profiling candidate voting on things like gay rights.

His Tea Party opponents smell blood in the water. Gosar is already complaining that his news conference to defend himself was done at public expense. It seems like the threats to his ex were done more on his behalf by his legal/political adviser. Still, I have to wonder what he would have expected. I don't see how he can be and act so innocent.

Arizona's Jim Kolbe was an out gay Republican congressman for years. He served 11 terms, favored amnesty for illegal immigrants and kept getting voted back to Congress with comfortable majorities in a district that bordered Mexico and included a retirement community.

He eventually retired and was replaced by Gabby Giffords who I'm sure he vastly preferred over the Republican contender.

Kolbe's sexuality didn't seem to matter to anyone.

ETA: I was hoping this was Sheriff Joe ...

This was before the rise of the Tea Party. Now I don't think a Republican like Kolbe would have a chance in hell of getting elected. Just look at how far to the right poor Romney has had to move in a futile attempt to placate the kook-base of the GOP.

Which is a sad commentary on just how far down the rabbit hole the GOP has slid.

I doubt if he's all that complex. Before all the gay marriage hysteria being a Republican homosexual wasn't such a stretch. Should they all be Democrats out of solidarity? No one expects heterosexuals to stick together.

I don't know how he'd fare today, but there's a strong libertarian/independent streak in Arizona. The legislature represents one pole, there are a lot of live-and-let-live types in the rest of the state. A lot of "conservative" posturing out of the Phoenix 'burbs though.
