Presidential Primaries 2012

This is amazing. W. "M." Romney is the biggest sucker ever born. Is there any doubt that D. Trump cooked up this endorsement, timed with the launch of the campaign for the Nevada caucus, just to grab a bit of free media for this Las Vegas hotel?

For crying out loud! D. Trump didn't even pick his endorsee until the last minute. Who it was going to be was secondary to the hoopla of the event itself.

You think the Donald is a publicity whore? The Donald would never do something like this for a little publicity about a hotel. The fact that his new season of The Apprentice is coming out had nothing to do with it either. ;)

Well, I thought of that, Spindrift, but being the supreme gentleman and urbane sophisticate that I am, I resisted the urge. That said ....

.... you're right, it should be. :)

Interesting tidbits of data from Nevada:

In an entrance poll, among voters who said that "having a strong moral character" was the most important quality in a candidate, only 1% went for Gingrich. Among those who said "is a true conservative" only 5% went for Romney. OTOH Romney got 73% of those who said "can defeat President Obama."

Yeah, at first I was scratching my head over why he picked Romney instead of Newt, who had done more public sucking up to Trump. But if, as you point out, he's doing it for purely selfish reasons, it makes sense to endorse the guy that's going to win. It was obvious that Romney was going to win Nevada, and it would have looked bad for The Donald to endorse the loser. By endorsing the winner, he can take partial credit, even if his endorsement didn't actually make any difference.

What a twat.

Facebook/POLITICO poll: Trump endorsement a net negative for Romney

Donald Trump's endorsement of Mitt Romney may have consumed the news cycle on Thursday, but Nevada Facebook users see the endorsement as a net negative for Romney, according to a Facebook/POLITICO poll.

Forty-one percent of those surveyed said Trump's endorsement gave them a more negative view of Romney, compared with just 10 percent who said they now view him more positively. Forty-nine percent said the endorsement had no effect.

Update time:
Romney: 70.6% -8.1%
Gingrich: 22.2% +15.3%
Paul: 4.0% +1.3%
Santorum: 0.8% -3.2%

Santorum looks like he'll come in fourth in SC despite his recent endorsement by evangelical leaders. Gingrich may win SC after all.

Update:

Romney: 86.0% +15.4%
Gingrich: 4.2% -18.0%
Santorum: 3.1% +2.3%
Paul: 3.0% -1.0%

Low turnout at Nevada caucuses

Mitt Romney’s easy victory in Nevada’s Republican presidential caucuses might, in the long run, be less important than the fact that a surprising number of Republicans who could have participated Saturday chose to stay home.

Republicans’ disappointing turnout foreshadows difficulty energizing GOP voters in Nevada, a key swing state in November’s general election.

Turnout was unlikely to match 2008, when 44,000 Republicans participated in Nevada’s caucuses. Complete figures were not released by the state party as of 10 p.m. Saturday, an indication of a lackluster showing.
. . .
To illustrate how important voter enthusiasm is, quickly answer this question: Who won the 2008 Nevada Democratic caucus, when 116,000, many of them newly registered voters, caucused?

No, it wasn’t President Barack Obama. Hillary Clinton won.

Still, 10 months later, Obama, fueled by the party members’ energy and organization, carried Nevada by 12 percentage points over Republican John McCain.

The lesson: Caucus turnout signaled the excitement of the Democratic base and helped perpetuate it through the general election, as the party tapped that energy to organize itself.

Obama’s easy victory in 2008 was credited to the so-called “enthusiasm gap” — Democratic voters were excited for a change after eight years under Republican President George W. Bush. Republicans, meanwhile, were lukewarm on their nominee, Arizona Sen. John McCain.

Donald Trump takes credit for Mitt Romney’s Nevada win

“There was a lot riding on that particular race in Nevada. And, it was interesting because the numbers were much, much greater than he thought,” Trump said. “And a lot of people are giving me credit, and I will accept that credit. Always accept credit.”

Romney finished with 50 percent of the vote, about the same he won Nevada with in the 2008 presidential Republican Caucus.

Also turnout was down by a lot from 2008, so Romney actually got less votes than in 2008.

W. "M"." Romney has really grabbed a tar baby with this D. Trump endorsement. How to you tell your endorser to NOT take credit for your performance? In this case, you can't. The mogul supports his own ambitions -- period.

But he got what he deserved. Anyone with a lick of sense would have thanked this TV reality show host for his support privately, and not gone to a ring-kissing ceremony at Trump Las Vegas Hotel.

I'm pretty sure the Donald takes credit for the sun coming up every morning.

Clean Sweep: Rick Santorum Defeats Mitt Romney In Three States

This changes the betting somewhat. A couple days ago it was here:
Update:

Romney: 86.0% +15.4%
Gingrich: 4.2% -18.0%
Santorum: 3.1% +2.3%
Paul: 3.0% -1.0%

Now:
Romney: 78.1% -7.9%
Santorum: 13.0% +9.9%
Gingrich: 3.5% -0.7%
Paul: 2.5% -0.5%

Delegate count:

Romney: 85
Santorum: 29
Gingrich: 29
Paul: 8
Huntsman: 2
(1144 needed to win)

Santorum and Gingrich are tied in delegates, but Santorum has The Big Mo.

None of the 3 states won in this Santorum flood awarded delegates, but it definitely makes the race interesting.

 what does that mean?

That the results of the primary are not binding on the state's delegates.

However, traditionally the delegates do tend to go along with the will of the voters usually, so I don't see any reason not to assume that Santorum will eventually get most of the delegates from these three states.

wow.

No-one saw that one coming.....

I guess Mitt really is unpopular.... :D

Actually, Mitt's campaign saw it coming and tried to blunt the effect. Apparently to no avail.

So Santorum finally - FINALLY - gets his turn to be the flavor-of-the-month. It will last just as long as the rest of the has-beens hung in there. I suspect the Republican establishment fears Santorum just as much as Newt so he will go just as far as Newt ... namely, nowhere.

Woo-hoo! And let the Crusades begin. I can't go a-googling from the office (farkin' Net Nannies), but there was a good write-up last week, I believe in Atlantic, on the confab the fundies held in Texas after NH. They decided to not bury the hatchets in each others' skulls for a change and find a real hard line social conservative they could support.

Yep - Rick Santorum. After Gingrich took SC, then Mitt took Florida and Nevada, maybe they're getting their message out there to the revival tents.

Can somebody give me an "Amen"? Go for the juggular, Ron! Did you hear what he said about you, Newt? I wouldn't take that if I was you, Mitt! Rick, you gonna take that lying down? Get up and hit 'im, man!
(Here I'll hold your jackets, boys.)

:D:D
