We disagree about OWS, let's leave it at that...

Are you for real? Communism killed a hundred million people.

What is it about Communism that requires you to kill people?
Honest question here. I'm neither fer it nor agin it, but I haven't heard anybody give a good, solid explanation of this. But I am suspicious, because my country (the US) has a history of knee-jerk anti-communism to the point of witch-hunts.

They did do it. Who cares why they thought it was a brilliant idea.

Because its very nature demands a totalitarian central authority. Large groups of people don't act like ants, bees, or automatons without a lot of coercion.

Well, I do. Or else I wouldn't have asked. I'd like to know whether or not killing people is a natural outgrowth of the ideology, or if it was just some violent elements using communism as a rationale.

Communism requires a community of perfect people. Marx theorized that perfect people would emerge naturally from existing conditions, and that Communist society would emerge naturally from perfect people.

In practice, when attempting to create a Communist society on a large scale by artificial means, it is necessary to purge the imperfect people. Thus all the killings (and also the labor camps, political prisons, secret police, etc.).

My bad. I thought you were the obligatory "Real communism is all gumdrops and rainbows" guy that shows up, like clockwork, whenever the astronomical death toll of communism is mentioned.

The above answers are all true. Communists are nasty, brutish thugs that want you to submit to their crazed dogma. The more brutality you unleash on people, the more they cow down and submit. Once mass killing starts it's hard to stop and becomes an end in itself. They ended up killing just to kill.

I've never heard this at all. Are you jerking his chain?

You have to kill people because you cannot allow anybody to escape from your communist society. Otherwise you suffer the social fate known as brain drain, where all your best and brightest abandon utopia. Of course, once you seal the borders you have to execute would-be escapees, and depending on the level of dogmatism you may start executing older people because they have not grown up indoctrinated in the perfection of society, etc., etc. The movie The Killing Fields explains this latter part quite well.

Because when you take away the ability of men to trade freely of their own will, and keep the fruits of their own labor, the only way to organize and motivate society is with the gun.

The thing about witch hunts is that witches don't exist. Communists, including communist spies infiltrating our government, did. The metaphor is chosen to obscure that part of the truth. I don't mean to blame you here, you didn't coin that metaphor, but I do mean to inform you. Reactions to real threats can be (and have been at times) excessive but the threat was indeed real.

Communism is an ideology, not a nationality. How can a communist infiltrate a government?

Are you honestly having a hard time figuring that out? Because I can tell you, if your question is sincere, but I'm not sure it is.

Did you mean to say Soviet spies existed? Because, of course, that's true. But a communist spy? Communism is just an ideology. An opinion. And voters are free to elect their own representatives with their own beliefs, at least in theory.
