Marines Urinating on Dead Guys?

This happens in war all the time. During the Vietnam conflict a black soldier who was a ventriloquist once got in trouble for cutting the dead vietcongs heads off and putting on a show using the head.

In war you can grow to hate the enemy so intensely that the hatred comes out in strange and frightening ways.

I'm not sure if it's hate so much as it is dehumanization. If you are in a warzone on a say to day basis, it's easy to stop thinking of the people you're trying to kill as people. When you constantly see dead people it's safest for your sanity to put the "people" part in a box.

that's how it appears to me, anyway.

I guarantee you there is some pissed off Marine Colonel that's tearing everyone a new one right now cause of this.

The point with military discipline is that you just do your job and move on. Bad PR is for the higher ups to deal with. If you go out of your way to make your CO look bad and add more negative PR, then there's hell to pay.

This is very embarrassing and our military should address this.

I'm a professional with many years in the field.

No reason for a professional shooter to piss on the dead.

Less reason to have a recording device in the field and use it to document the act.

Whole crops of stupid, all in one place.

I can’t condone this behavior, and the fact that someone filmed it and thought it would never get out and cause irreparable damage is beyond idiotic.

However, I’m getting a little tired of America’s internal outrage over this. As Americans we should be outraged that these interminable wars with no definable end game keep multiplying. Dishonest leaders and their war profiteer buddies keep sending young people to fight these endless conflicts, making them deploy multiple times…while the majority of Americans just let it silently roll on…and then we act outraged when stressed-out, traumatized soldiers act inhumanely? Really?

Again, I can’t applaud the actions of the soldiers here, but the reality is the dead guys were probably firing at these men and trying to kill them mere moments before the video was taken. Why are these men even over there? Focus your outrage on bringing these men home.

Urinating on someone is not really an insult over there, much less pretending to urinate. Spitting on someone, on the other hand , is a deadly insult.

You get charged with second degree murder, the prosecutor arguing that your actions proved not simple self defence, but intent to be a vigilante and wanting to waste somebody.

If your lawyer has any sense, he gets you to plead guilty to manslaughter.

I don't think so. Guess it depends on what state you live in, however.

Ok, let's go with a civilian example. Let's say some murderers came into your home, and you killed them. You then decided to pee on them as a statement or who knows for what reason.

Do we "throw the book" at you? What should your penalty be? After all, you may be making more criminals mad and they could go on a killing spree as a protest against people peeing on them after shooting them.

But somehow these Marines deserve punishment???

If someone comes into your house you are acting for yourself and yourself alone. You will bear the consequences.

If you are a marine, you are representing your country. Your country and service colleagues will bear the consequences.

Incorrect, where did you get that idea?

I can imagine hating someone enough to kill them and, maybe, keep on hitting them after they are dead.

But urinating on the dead body ? Out of "rage" ? No, that was premeditated.

Look at the video closely. They are not really doing it.

I hate to admit I watched it more than once, but after someone suggested they were just going through the motions, I took a another look, and it is apparent the guy on the far left has a stream going..

FWIW, I'm in the camp that taking/releasing the video was more of a problem than what they did.

At least they didn't teabag the bodies. :boxedin:
We don't really know that they didn't..

Do those movies provide examples of US Marines committing atrocities ?

There were some fairly graphic depictions (one was toned down - in reality the Japanese soldier was not yet dead...those who've read the book know which one I mean) of accounts told by Eugene B. Sledge in With the Old Breed, which the series was partially based on. I can't vouch for the Robert Leckie incidents early in the series as I haven't read his book.

These paled in comparison to what the Japanese did both in the series and in the war in general, but the short answer is yes.
