Vaccines: how do I talk to my anti-vac wife about it?

You'll notice attempts of censorship by source ridicule is a fav weapon.

And yet the same naysayers manage to deign and debate aliens, moon landing and anything that is brought up. Does their time and energies have so little value that they can be diddled away?

Well said, Clayton. These people must be independently wealthy and bored to spend all their time on this forum and who knows what other forums. Is it because their solid science is under serious attack from nonbelievers like us that they man the gates so resolutely?

Lancet. 1999 Jun 12;353(9169):2026-9.
Autism and measles, mumps, and rubella vaccine: no epidemiological evidence for a causal association.

BMJ. 2002 Feb 16;324(7334):393-6.
Measles, mumps, and rubella vaccination and bowel problems or developmental regression in children with autism: population study.

Arch Dis Child. 2003 Aug;88(8):666-70.
Prevalence of autism and parentally reported triggers in a north east London population.

Yes, very nice. More studies that conclude that the evidence doesn't support the autism connection which no doubt makes the parents feel much better about their now autistic child. When we will see some serious work on determining why these children developed autism?

As for the affect on parents, what probably hurt the MMR cause more than anything was Prime Minister Tony Blair's refusal to say which vaccine his children received. Yes, it was a private matter but as the PM, his silence spoke volumes to the public and the press played on it mercilessly.

Next time I speak to Dr Wakefield, I'll ask him why he didn't take up the invitation to conduct the aforementioned studies.

I see a contradiction.

As for your point, no, I don't think vaccines should be optional, at least not the ones for critical illnesses such as polio. Yes, they occassionally hurt or even kill people. This goes for everything humans have created, from staircases to seat belts. Yet, I'm in favour of vaccinations for the same reason I'm in favour of seatbelt laws -- vaccines save far more people than they kill. Even if they did in fact somehow cause autism (or some other debilitating ailment) in some few unlucky kids, they'd still be a huge boon to humanity.

This is the serious problem with people believing in the vaccine paradigm - they are dangerous to people who have the ability to think critically. This is the same fear-based mentality that allowed religious authorities to dominate mankind through the dark ages; enabled the prosecution of the witch-hunts for centuries and that stifles any real investigation into 9-11 by the media. Yep, you guys are dangerous and your victims are already legion but you won't be happy until you've contaminated every living being on the planet.

Is this a game to you?

Seriously, you've been going on for pages about how the entire medical industry is evil, how countless people are being exploited, kept sick, and killed, how millions of childrens suffer from autism and other health problems because of a giant scam...

...and when we take the topic seriously, all of a sudden that's a red flag to you:confused:?

This is the serious problem with people believing in the vaccine paradigm - they are dangerous to people who have the ability to think critically.
So you're confessing you don't have the ability to think critically:p?

Possibly. The difference, of course, is the fact that today, most of us are blessed with the ability to empirically analyze our actions and work out their actual outcomes. Instead of, say, deciding to have our morals dictated from above by clergy, blame some innocent woman for an epidemic, or deciding that the Jews were behind 9/11. Or, for that matter, starting a campaign to end vaccination because you're terrified of Big Pharma.

Incorrect, Deetee. All of the complications mentioned will be of iatrogenic causes. Measles is just one expression of the body's natural detoxification process and left to itself and pure water when desired, the patient will soon recover in better shape than before they went in. (Try this next time you get the flu and see for yourself.) Unfortunately, doctors who think they know better than Nature will attempt to control the fever, hindering or stopping the eliminative effort which in turn seriously endangers the organs and the organism. I'm not sure what other nonsense they do in the case of measles but the obvious results of their handiwork are reflected in your stats above. The unseen damage will manifest over the years as other "infectious" diseases or as chronic illness.

You can say that again.

If child 2000 was severely affected how was child 25, who had no noticeable reaction, affected? Child 1400? Child 1775?

It is being done, all over with real research: http://www.hhs.gov/autism/#research

There is not reason to continue the wild goose chase in the autism/vaccine connection, because it is pretty clear none exists. That was known just a couple of years after Wakefield tried to blame vaccines, so it is time for you to move on... ten years ago.

The 800 lb. gorilla of the autism crisis is that the scientific community can't determine how children are becoming autistic at such a high rate.

What could impact so many children in Japan, France, UK, USA, worldwide? There has to be an obvious common denominator and isn't the family tree. The victims are babies for Petes sake.

jamesbuhls seems to have exited stage left the forum. I wonder what his wife decided.

So where is that data on how autism started to rise in the USA after the introduction of the MMR vaccine in 1971? You have not provided any cites.

Vaccines are just nature's way of holistically healing the ravages of disease brought on by evil humors. All things on this earth are natural, and things made by man are even more so. Mercury is a pure, healing substance, and other metals like aluminum are similarly so.

The bioquantum pathogenetic effects of vaccines sets up an EMF which imparts unique healing and prophylactic powers. If the vaccines are injected directly into the blood stream, as they almost always are, this power is amplified within the neuroendocrine immune axis in the brain.

Any apparent ill effect from vaccines is merely the body's way of implementing energy healing and is harmless, and any persisting ill effects are the result of mistaken attempts by parents to seek alternative healing modalities instead of letting the vaccine's regeneration effects take their natural time course.

Este, Do we have to do a course in Conspiracy 101? You don't need a vast global conspiracy. You just need enough brainwashed sheep who follow the herd doing as they're told. Very few people actually need to know that it's all about the money. The people who do question by the sheep and fail to receive support from others who aren't willing to lose their lucrative positions for the sake of principle. The ranks of both sheep and heretics are made of honest, hard-working people who are doing what they think is best for their community and profession.
Your scoff at my request to hold the conspiracy theory belies your launch into one. Who has "questioned and try to buck the system are automatically ostracized"? I showed you literally thousands of studies that do question vaccine safety, granted some are by nutters in nutter journals but that is only a handful, the rest are by bona fide researchers. How else do you explain how the IOM generated this monster report on...gasp...vaccine complications? You don't get to justify ignorance to outright lying by your go-to "experts" with "they're just doing what they think is right", because there is a mountain of scientific evidence which simply flies in the face of theirs and your claims. But science is hard isn't it?

Consider that many of these people uncovered the truth about cancer, heart disease, diabetes, AIDS and probably all other major diseases decades ago and when they reported to the various medical associations, it fell on deaf ears.
Oh really? Like who?

Forgive me for not going through all 3k but from a quick sampling, I found only favorable conclusions. Statistically, that implies that only favorable reports made it past the censors. ;)
They are most certainly not favourable conclusions but simply, sane and rational presentations of vaccine adverse events and effects. Emotional weepy testimonials may do it for you but that ain't science.

In this Cochrane Library publication the authors felt the need to add this warning:

Phrases such as the following are hardly glowing praise:
  • "Studies funded from public sources were significantly less likely to report conclusions favorable to the vaccines",
  • "reliable evidence on influenza vaccines is thin"
  • "widespread manipulation of conclusions"
  • "spurious notoriety of the studies"
You know, I'm actually on the fence about influenza vaccine effectiveness data, however, Thomas Jefferson is a bit skewed in his reviews on influenza vaccines as his group routinely dismiss excellent clinical and population epidemiological studies simply because they are not his Holy Grail, randomised-control trials (RCT). That said, most studies in his review are not funded by industry and negative conclusions are still published and there to read.

Nice one, Este. By definition, all ostracised scientist will be disreputable so it's impossible to name one who is both ostracised and reputable?
Not at all and I'll give you an example, Sammelweis (although his pariah status was more due to him being a dick than a medical heretic). Go ahead, name a single scientist who was ostracised simply for questioning vaccine safety. By the way, you quoted T. Jefferson, who questions vaccine safety all the time and how has he not been rubbished?

Of course I would have her NVICP claim. Everybody sends me a copy. Get real!
NVICP judgements are all online. Do you mean to tell me that you didn't even take a modicum of effort to check the veracity of her claim? Hmm, I seem to be more questioning than you, so much for me being a sheep.
Testimonials is all us common folk have. It's our way of trying to warn people not to trust the gods of medicine. Are doctors going to warn you that some people get incredibly ill after having this here vaccine and, although it's unlikely that this harmless vaccine could be the cause, you should at least consider the risk before blindly letting me violate your body's integrity? No, so get educated and make up your own mind based on facts, not trust and hype.
Dare I ask how you could possibly reconcile these two statements? I read studies and weigh the available evidence (and have the requisite formal education and experience to do so), you swoon at testimonials and you're telling me to get educated? Your statements typify the anti-vaxxer.

Perhaps I should find a list showing Wakefield's inability to collaborate with experts who have the skills and qualifications that he doesn't. It's always possible that he bought some textbooks on neurology, immunology and microbiology and was hoping to wing it!
You're dodging; Brian Deer isn't the only source for Wakefield's patent which you admitted was damning, blew it off because it's on Deer's website and you won't even find your own copy to compare? That's cheap and lazy and don't think it's going unnoticed. As for Wakefield's qualifications and collaborations, I'll make it simple; he has none and either rejects collaborators findings or finds those who will produce the results he wants. He developed his so-called measles vaccine by himself unless you want to count the layman whose child Wakefield injected with transfer factor without any approval. Watta guy.

And as for proof of Deer's reliability, listen to the documentary. You can do it during any lull in responding to us unscientific types.
That's not a documentary; it's a big testimonial. Deer has validated all of his claims about Wakefield with that pesky evidence you don't seem to be very fond of.

No, it would be far better to leave nature to it's course instead of thinking that you know better, especially when you don't. Just like the medical profession, you either have ignored the centuries of evidence showing that disease is nature's way of curing the body of toxicosis and restoring homeostasis. Doctors attempt to cure the cure and in so doing prevent the body from expelling the life-threatening toxins but that's not important because the doctor can say "I cured you" and charge his poor patient for the benefit.
"Centuries of evidence"? "Toxicosis"? "Restoring homeostasis"? What a bunch of eugenics rubbish and sick too. The mortality for measles dropped significantly with that evil cure, antibiotics. What kind of medieval nonsense are you going on about?

As for your PubMed papers, I've already told you how much weight they carry with me.
Given what you said above and your love of YouTube testimonials, makes perfect sense.

Ah, germ theory denier too, crank theory magnetism in action. Please tell me how dead people from measles infections are in better shape than before "they went in"? Did infectious disease never kill or permanently disable prior to modern medicine? Given your detachment from reality, I should let your posts speak for themselves.

Este

Gotta love the germ theory deniers, who apparently believe that an autism diagnosis after being vaccinated is because of the vaccine, but getting the flu after your contagious coworker coughs on you isn't because of the virus. Amazing.

How many times do I have to point out that autism rates only started going up when the diagnostic criteria for it changed?

And when was the last time a kid was diagnosed with general mental retardation?

There you go: vaccines eliminated retardation.

So you have nothing. That figures. So why should we care about your opinions, since you have no real facts?

I offer my opinion only because it might bring hope to others who are still mired in the false teachings of modern medicine and also to those who are mired in the false teachings of herbalism, homeopathy, etc. Only the body has the power to cure. Our part is only to stop feeding it rubbish, stop poisoning it with drugs and other treatments and start living healthily. It's the intelligent thing to do.

Fortunately, Natural Hygiene is there to help people learn how.

Now that I've offered my opinion, it's up to each individual to consider their options. For those who choose health, their biggest obstacle will be avoiding the vaccine believers who would poison them against their will for the good of the herd.

Is this like the ongoing search for the cause and cure of cancers, MS, diabetes, atheriosclerosis, AIDS, arthritis, etc when the answers to both questions were handed to the medical community on a plate numerous times in the 20th Century?

The possibility of a link between MMR and autism is only a part of the vaccine debate. Moving on will happen only after vaccination is consigned to the museum of the macabre with other medical treatment travesties such as bloodletting, mercury and arsenic.

What a load of swampgas! But as fiction goes, not a bad effort. :)

and what was that answer?

Yes, I'm curious as well what that supposed answer is.

You do realise that you are on a sceptics' forum and you are going to have to bring more to the table than your opinion. Furthermore, health and the utilisation of medicine are not mutually exclusive, quite the contrary in fact and since you are so fond of anecdotes, my very healthy family is proof of that.
