If you do not like someone, or if they are a rival, or if they are not playing for your side, just quote them out of context:

The funny thing is, even "out of context", I think both quotes are still spot on. It's great to be able to fire people, because that means you have power, and let's be honest, who doesn't like to have power? And the economy is doing terribly, so Obama really is going to try to steer the debate away from the economy.
 
THe one line quote misses the point.

I have had people do this to me.

It is not playing fair.

It makes Mitt sound like a monster. If the Neocons are as dim as the Liberals, the trick will work.

A falling unemployment rate is "doing terribly"?

He didn't say it was great to have the ability to fire people, although that might be what he meant. He said he likes being able to fire people, which is at best an odd way to phrase whatever argument he was making.

Even in context of health care, it seems like he's implying that people don't have the ability to switch insurance companies or doctors under Obamacare. It would have been better if he had specified who the people are who won't be able to choose their insurance company under Obama's plan, and how Romney's plan would differ.

Ironically, in a recent ad Romney took a quote from Obama completely out of context (Obama was actually quoting McCain). According to PolitiFact:

The ad then has a clip of Obama saying,"If we keep talking about the economy, we’re going to lose."

The clear implication is that Obama believes that his economic record is so bad that he will lose in 2012 unless he can steer the conversation away from the economy.

But the Obama camp, among others, immediately charged that the clip was taken out of context. Was it?

Here’s what Obama said in the October 2008 speech, which came about two weeks before he defeated Sen. John McCain:

"Even as we face the most serious economic crisis of our time, even as you are worried about keeping your jobs or paying your bills or staying in your homes, my opponent's campaign announced earlier this month that they want to ‘turn the page’ on the discussion about our economy so they can spend the final weeks of this election attacking me instead," Obama said in the speech. "Sen. McCain's campaign actually said, and I quote, ‘If we keep talking about the economy, we're going to lose.’"​

When the unemployment rate is going down largely because people have given up looking for work, then yeah, the economy is doing terribly. You did know that those people aren't included, didn't you? Look at the data for 2011:

Yes, unemployment went down a bit. But the participation rate isn't going up. In fact, it's going down too. What kind of improvement do you think that indicates?

Interestingly, if you look at the long term trend, labor force participation is still higher than it was before the 1980s. Back before then, it was common for households to have one breadwinner.

Also note that Americans are getting older and baby boomers are starting to retire.
