Quoting Mitt out of Context

If you do not like someone, or if they are a rival, or if they are not playing for your side, just quote them out of context:

http://news.yahoo.com/inevitable-mitt-takes-hit-144225761--abc-news.html

"I want individuals to have their own insurance," Romney said yesterday in a speech at the Nashua, N.H. Chamber of Commerce. "That means the insurance company will have an incentive to keep you healthy. It also means if you don't like what they do, you can fire them. I like being able to fire people who provide services to me." http://abcn.ws/woxwfr
The "I like being able to fire people" line became an instant hit among his rivals.

The funny thing is, even "out of context", I think both quotes are still spot on. It's great to be able to fire people, because that means you have power, and let's be honest, who doesn't like to have power? And the economy is doing terribly, so Obama really is going to try to steer the debate away from the economy.

THe one line quote misses the point.

I have had people do this to me.

It is not playing fair.

It makes Mitt sound like a monster. If the Neocons are as dim as the Liberals, the trick will work.

This isn't really news though, is it? Is the blatant nature of the misquote that does it for you?

A falling unemployment rate is "doing terribly"?

You sure have a funny way of looking at things, Zig.

He didn't say it was great to have the ability to fire people, although that might be what he meant. He said he likes being able to fire people, which is at best an odd way to phrase whatever argument he was making.

Even in context of health care, it seems like he's implying that people don't have the ability to switch insurance companies or doctors under Obamacare. It would have been better if he had specified who the people are who won't be able to choose their insurance company under Obama's plan, and how Romney's plan would differ.

Incidentally, it is hard for me to have much sympathy for Mittens on this one (though, yes, he is being quoted out of context) when he goes around telling pants-on-fire lies such as "Obama hasn't created any jobs" or "I [Mitt] have created more jobs than Obama"

I beg to differ, Mittens...

Cry me a river.

Ironically, in a recent ad Romney took a quote from Obama completely out of context (Obama was actually quoting McCain). According to PolitiFact:

The ad then has a clip of Obama saying,"If we keep talking about the economy, we’re going to lose."

The clear implication is that Obama believes that his economic record is so bad that he will lose in 2012 unless he can steer the conversation away from the economy.

But the Obama camp, among others, immediately charged that the clip was taken out of context. Was it?

Here’s what Obama said in the October 2008 speech, which came about two weeks before he defeated Sen. John McCain:

"Even as we face the most serious economic crisis of our time, even as you are worried about keeping your jobs or paying your bills or staying in your homes, my opponent's campaign announced earlier this month that they want to ‘turn the page’ on the discussion about our economy so they can spend the final weeks of this election attacking me instead," Obama said in the speech. "Sen. McCain's campaign actually said, and I quote, ‘If we keep talking about the economy, we're going to lose.’"

When the unemployment rate is going down largely because people have given up looking for work, then yeah, the economy is doing terribly. You did know that those people aren't included, didn't you? Look at the data for 2011:

Yes, unemployment went down a bit. But the participation rate isn't going up. In fact, it's going down too. What kind of improvement do you think that indicates?

You sure have a funny way of looking at things, Zig.

Looking at more than one number is funny? Well, I guess maybe it is.

Labor force participation rate:

Real impressive job creation record there.

They thought they were "getting" Romney...

and they just settled it...

FOR Romney.

Perry, who I've never liked at all, claims to be some Christian and will play these kind of deceptive and dishonest games?!

Toast. Go home to Texas, dumbass.

Huntsman too? When it gets right down to it - no integrity. No chance anyway. Go home.

Newt? Selfish little petulant child. Done.

Mitt Romney for President of the United States of America 2012.

Defeat Obama.

i think it is entirely pathetic, that the most powerful nation on earth has to choose between morons for a leader.
it is a sad state of affairs.

On what basis does your marxist/communist/<snip> opinion call Romney a moron?

Interestingly, if you look at the long term trend, labor force participation is still higher than it was before the 1980s. Back before then, it was common for households to have one breadwinner.

Also note that Americans are getting older and baby boomers are starting to retire.
