Why vegans are simply better people

I say, I say those are some damn fine mutton chops there.

In other news, doesn't it kind of feel like a drunken tramp has come into the room and started yelling at the chairs?

I can't get mutton around here any more. I miss mutton pies.

A fair point. They probably give you muesli for breakfast. That tastes like the sweepings from the bottom of a birdcage.

I remember years ago, the lead singer to Men At Work using that same description when Martha Quinn (I think), asked what the heck vegimite was.

When I watch people who smoke, I often ask myself how can they do it. What is it that makes these people tick. They deliberately engage in a vice that they know will probably hasten their own death.

Is it because they really don't enjoy life and dying early is OK with them.

Is it because they don't believe in the science that shows how dangerous smoking is?

Or it it because they are selfish. They think of themselves and their enjoyment and don't worry about the consequences until they occur. They don't care that smoking arround their kids infuences their kids to smoke. They don't care that others often have to foot the medical bills in the form of higher insurance premiums, and they don't care about secondary smoke.

I've only just found this thread, so ifd the point has already been made, my apologies.

Preamble - those in the UK can skip this and go to the main point below, but it doesn't appear known in wide areas outside.

For those not aware of the world outside [fill in your own predjudice], here in the UK we have the National Health Service. This provides health care where at the point of use/need we don't pay. Moreover, we have access to the finest health care in the world - the USA notwithstanding. To illustrate, I give two personal examples.

A few years ago, my wife suddenly suffered severe chest pains. I didn't have to worry about if we could pay: I called 999 - Emergency - and an ambulance arrived within minutes - before, in fact, I had completed the call. The upshot was that she was eventually diagnosed with gall stones, surgery was organised, full recovery.

Last year I suffered what turned out to be a seisure. My wife called 999, I was carted into A&E, and over a period of a couple of months went through the whole gamut of medical investigations - CAT, MRI, EEG etc - all at no cost to me at the point of need.

HOWEVER, I (and my wife) have been paying taxes over the whole of our working lives just so that this happens. Socialist Medicine. How awful.

Main point

Lets apply this to smokers.

A while ago one of the major tobacco companies - Phillip Morris, I think - carried out a study which compared the health costs which smokers incurred because of their habit, with the tax they had paid on the tobacco they had consumed during their smoking lives.

It turned out that they had paid more tax on the tobacco than the cost to the health service of their habit, leaving a surplus which subsidised the health care of non-smokers . Hmm

Perhaps smokers should be commended on their public service attitude whereby they sacrificed their longevity for the public good.

PS. I don't smoke - now.

What an overweight meat-eater might look like ...

In your case it would appear that you get a decent amount of exercise ... essential for meat-eaters or vegans to stay in shape. Regardless of the diet, over the long-term, if you're expending more calories than you take in, you won't end up a giant tub of goo.

Yes, believe it or not, if you know the harm of all dairy, all simple carbs, all meat and all oils, the foods that are left, the foods we were evolved to eat, you can eat all you want, you can stuff yourself with them night and day, and you won't get fat.

That concept is hard for modern eaters to realize, but thats what I do, i eat non stop and i don't get fat. Same with the wife and kids, we were fat, now we eat all we want and we are not fat. And in case your going to come up with a comeback that we are miserable eating this way,,,,don't...cause you acquire a new taste that is very satisfying. I like my steamed mushrooms, bok choi, brown rice with Tamari Sauce every bit as you like your 18 oz steak, loaded baked potatoe, green beans and sour cream. Its just that I am not living with the athlerosclerosis and the heartburn.

Peace out

I really hope your bok choy isn't one of the things you eat "nonstop". Large quantities of bok choy (a daily serving) is considered toxic. As for you tamari sauce, I use it for stir frying veggies. It's very tasty but it's another one that I use very, VERY sparingly. 1 tbsp is almost half of your recommended daily intake of sodium.

What?

From wikipedia ...

Toxic effects

Pak choi contains glucosinolates. These compounds have been reported to prevent cancer in small doses, but are toxic to humans in large doses. In 2009, an elderly woman who had been consuming 1 to 1.5 kg of raw Pak choi per day developed hypothyroidism, resulting in myxedema coma.[5] There are other milder symptoms from over-consumption of Pak choi, such as nausea, dizziness and indigestion in people with weaker digestive systems. Sometimes this is caused by not thoroughly cooking.

I think it's safe to say that 2.2 – 3.3 lbs. of raw bok choy exceeds most peoples "daily serving".

The paragraph was talking about how great his or her choices in food are and how he/she can eat them all day, every day, then gave examples of food. That's why I specified "non stop".

ETA I indended on putting ("more than" a daily serving). I didn't understand what you were so surprised about. My bad.

Reverbvision gave the impression that he/she was stuffing themselves with vegetables all day. I suppose that the windows are always open in that household.

I wonder how he/she/it reconciles that vegie-only approach with the observation that humans are constructed to operate as omnivores...

To be fair, it is certainly harder to eat yourself into obesity if your food of choice tastes terrible.

All taken in 2011.

:bigclap
...dude, posting pics of a buck you shot on a "vegans = awesome" thread is the best thing I've seen in a while.

You, my friend, have just won the internet for 2011. All subsequent jokes will be counted in the joke-tally for 2012.

For the record, it was two different bucks. The first one weighed about 200 lb and the second weighed about 180 lb. This overweight meateater lifted them both into the back of my truck by myself.

You remind me of someone. Not a slight BTW. I grew up in small rural community of Utah. Raising rabbits and chickens for food and hunting and fishing. People who have never lived that life often don't understand its allure. We evolved to hunt and be active. Not to eat carrots watching Sex and the City. Now, that's not a moral observation. Just a fact about human well being.
