People are celebrating because a very evil man died, and they hope that change for the better will ensue. That may be a vain hope, but that's still the hope.

It's almost certainly going to get worse in the short term, but I wouldn't rule out the possibility of long-term improvements because of this. For example, if the regime starts to implode, that's probably going to spell trouble for a while, but depending on HOW it implodes, there might be light at the end of the tunnel. This isn't a given, of course, but let's hope.
