Anyway, my SIL had a non-cancerous ovarian cyst that was the size of a football (for the non-USA meaning of football).

But the question in my mind is how can something like that happen without it being noticed and treatment sought?

Well, people that do not hold religious beliefs are unlikely to make a claim that any god cured someone.

I do not believe these claims are unique to Christians. People from many religions claim that their brand of faith can effect miraculous cures or other things such as exorcisms.

African religions, hinduism & Native American religions all come to mind.

When someone religious beats cancer they cheer for god. They use these stories to try to get more religious people.

When someone non-religious beats cancer they cheer for medical science and luck. Hard to use that as a recruitment tool.

Perhaps it was noticed and caught, but continued to grow while being 'prayed away'. That is the downside of faith healing. Tumors aren't good christians and they don't listen well to prayer.
