What about Hawk's decision to pilot aircraft with Air Force personnel when the pilots union walked off the job.

Seems a reasonable enough decision, given that they were Air Force planes.

Methinks some people have very short memories.

Those of us who were in the ADF at the time remember it well enough.

Militant unions can destroy a company. Anyone remember Ansets demise? A company has to be able to compete, otherwise it will surelly go down the gurgler like many have already.

What exactly does this have to do with the present government, or the discussion at hand?

Sorry, that was in response to amb. But since you raise it, I don't think Gillard has done anything nearly as sneaky as the Howard-Patricks deal.

So screwing the whole nation over the carbon tax against her explicit promise not to impose one was less sneaky than the waterfront?

As I say, being sneaky in the the national interest is a lot different than being sneaky for selfish ones.

And I repeat, it is this sneakiness that gives her a huge credibility problem, that is reflected in the polls.

Look, I think amb has something of a point here. At the moment we don't know who the Republicans are going to put forward as a candidate, so it's not really fair to pillory him for not knowing who their candidate is.

As it stands at the moment though I think amb has been a little rash in claiming who would win their election since at the moment since we don't know which candidate will be their presidential candidate.

Hahaha, no way! We could all see that happening rather obviously in the post-election wrangle. And all it took from Gillard was a lie* in an election campaign (un-precedented!). How elementary. The waterfront dispute was a (fairly large) conspiracy between the Liberal cabinet and private enterprise.

Gillard's lie* didn't involve anything nearly as exotic. You can't call it sneakier, it's just not in the same league.

This is what I mean. At no stage have I criticised the acts of the Howard Government, and even admitted to admiration for their guile. And yet you still feel the need to defend and contrast them with Gillard's rather banal version of "sneaky".

FYI many believe the carbon tax is "in the national interest" too, but we won't bring that topic up here.

Well again I just don't give Julia (or the ALP) that much credit these days. I just don't think they're competent enough (though credit to the Slipper deal) to be sneaky on a scale that is notable.

And I'll repeat just for the record. Even if Obama wins, he is not as dumb as the present incumbent in Canberra to risk it all for an ideology. There will never be a $23 per ton carbon tax in the States.
