Luckily because we have something the rest of the world hasn't. Resources. Because had it not been for that, we would be in a much worse position than one half of the country is in.

But amb, you have to consider whoever is in power is going to factor this into their strategic planning. And it is not always a given resources will see you though.

The misjudgments by Gillard and her government are the reasons she and Labor are being smashed in the polls - which I would like to remind everyone is the topic of this thread.

I would ask one and all what she should do with Thompson? Is his plagiarising acceptable? For mine his trip was tantamount to theft (on face value). Should she sack him now that she has Slipper on board? Immediately after the Durban talkfest has finished comes the news that Canada has withdrawn from the Kyoto Accord citing a $14 billion cost of compliance and the failure of the US, China and India to join the agreement. With an election coming up next year in the US, and a good chance the Republicans to wrest the Whitehouse back, the US may never do anything about so-called climate change. This makes the Gillard regime look even more ridicules in kicking it's own goal and risking the well being of the Australian economy by jumping the gun and introducing a carbon tax. This, and the lack of any action to stop the boats guarantees that even if Daffy Duck is leading the Liberal Party, they will romp in by a min. of 20-30 seats.

I think that is fair enough - and I hope he does get the axe. But it begs the question, why is he only sackable after the numbers are safe? If he was unacceptable now he was unacceptable then - or do you think this this plagiarism was the last straw?

Well, I'm putting myself in the position of the PM. Obviously his previous indiscretions (assuming he is guilty of them) deserve to be punished by sacking (plus any relevant legal proceedings). But my idealism died when I graduated university and I thoroughly understand (and condone) keeping him on due to the disposition of the Federal Parliament up until recently. Politics is a dirty game. You can't do the right thing all the time as often there are broader issues at stake.

I too can absolutely understand Gillard's pragmatism. However when she was talking being about open and honest, the new paradigm and high standards etc, and then falls at the first hurdle, I reckon people are entitled to call her on it.

What about Hawk's decision to pilot aircraft with Air Force personnel when the pilots union walked off the job. Methinks some people have very short memories. Militant unions can destroy a company. Anyone remember Ansets demise? A company has to be able to compete, otherwise it will surelly go down the gurgler like many have already.

If Howard had three really sneaky moves in 10 years, I reckon that compares pretty favourably to even more from Gillard in 18 just months.
On the plus side for Howard, the stevedoring problem was going affect the nation's interests, the others just Gillards or Labors.

I reckon they are different and while I get the comparison, I also don't reckon we have lemons and lemons.

Is Obama in the same position as Gillard vis a vis needing the support of a third party to achieve stable government?

Sorry, that was in response to amb. But since you raise it, I don't think Gillard has done anything nearly as sneaky as the Howard-Patricks deal. And I mean that as a criticism; whether you were for or against the smashing of the waterfront unions, you can't help but admire the way the Liberal Party got ◊◊◊◊ done.
