Australian Federal political polls

The dagos wogs or whatever you wish to call them came here in an orderly fashion. Apart from the ten pound Poms all other Europeans paid their own way here aboard ships that were used exclusively for immigrants. I was on one such ship. The population then was less than 12 million, now it's over 21 million and this country cannot sustain a population much above say a max of 30 million. I suggest you read a book written by that great Aussie who truly cares for this country, Dick Smith about what can happen with overpopulation.

Rubbish on so many levels I can't even be bothered to detail them all. Great Aussie Dick Smith? What a laugh. Almost singlehandedly destroyed the Australian electronics industry, and he acknowledges this.

And do you realise that you are spouting deep, dark green philosophy? Tim Flannery, a great mate of Bob Brown, advocates a population of 12 million. Do you agree? Perhaps you might (greenie) because that happened to be the population when you arrived. How will this be achieved?

Have you looked at demographic projections for Australia without immigration? Have you looked at skill shortages hampering our economy? Do you want immigration to cease, regardless of the consequences?

Did you at least have a glance at the link I provided, or do you think you know better than most.

I had a look at the link. A lot of what it said was contradictory.

But I didn't realise you were a deep, dark green amb.

The loony Greens would destroy this country in less than a decade and you know it.

Sounds an awful lot like you're bloody grateful that Australia gave you a home and allowed you to come here to work, live, love, and grow to a ripe old age contributing to the greater community along the way, you just don't want that opportunity extended to those who want to do the same, particularly those who are escaping some of the worst regimes and wars of the 21st century.

In other words, it sounds like you're a hypocrit. Of course, there is a totally reasonable and understandable reason why you are not, which is...

Dick Smith destroyed the Australian electronics business did he. For a person who is in some kind of industry I would think would comprehend that one has to compete. If you can't do that, you soon go out of business. Here is another link, at least give the man a say.........................http://dicksmithpopulation.com/2010/08/11/letter-of-introduction-by-dick-smith/

Nope, I don't wish to read any of Smith's rationalisations. Good to know how you now support deep green philosophies though. Comrade.

That's what I thought. Just like a fundy, refuse to even consider there's no god. Your mind is made up and nothing will shift it. :p

Tell me, just how many people say, Sydney or Melbourne can sustain? Another three, four, maybe five million people each? Won't happen? Have a look at the statistics and see how quickly Australia grew from 10 million people to more than double that in such a short period of time.

Oh good I'm not on ignore. Had me worried there.

If you rocked up to this country now, as you had when you first came here, would you turn you away?

I'm just a poor country boy brought up here. I lay no claim to this nation more than you. You, however seem to be using population as an excuse to deny a tiny, tiny minority of people the same chance you got.

It isn't entirely appropriate, but what the hey:

"Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"

(and yeah, Alfies attempts regardless, we are drifting hopelessly off topic here, would probably be a good idea to split these off to the immigration thread I think.)

Actually despite what the pollies say in public, they do care. So do the press and beyond.

Polls give an indication as to public sentiment, opinion and trends. Using data from same, governments, opposition, lobby groups, activists etc can all determine appropriate strategies and investment considerations.

Without the polls how would Abbott and Gillard know that they are on the nose? How would they set about rectifying their positions and make changes - if they feel the need that is.

Leaders are sacked and promoted on the basis of them (remember Rudd?)

While many might not see the point of them, they are an integral part of the system and the way government operates between formal voting. I liken them to an indication of form (say home and away matches) leading up to the grand final that is the federal election. To lose week after week without making appropriate changes to personnel, strategy etc and then lose the election would reflect the leadership of an idiot.

Polls are important and people do - and should - take some notice of them; they are a handy tool when used in an appropriate context.

Dick Smith is an arseclown.

Why, because he differs from your left wing views?

Hahaha um, yeah. Dick's parochial populism differs from my (extremely) left wing views that include my opposition to protectionism and support of globalisation and free trade.

I've always been confused on how to politically categorise a support of free trade or globalisation.

That's because it's not possible. The Liberals supported the so-called leftist philosophy of protectionism, where Labor broke down the tariff walls.
