On the Cain Train

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel is reporting some possible federal campaign and tax law violations by the Cain campaign:

Herman Cain's two top campaign aides ran a private Wisconsin-based corporation that helped the GOP presidential candidate ... Prosperity USA
Those two aids are Block, the cigarette smoker, and his wife, who are supposedly funded by the Kochs.

The NYT is reporting that one of the victims was paid $35,000, a years salary to shut up. Cain had previously stated it was 3 months salary I believe. The article goes on to explain that the confidentiality agrement has been invalidated by Cain, and I would imagine that pretty soon the two victims will be on the TV telling their side of the story.

We are in agreement on this point. Surely he must have suspected this would
surface and should have known what he was going to say. The fact that he wasn't prepared and waddled around with his answers is certainly troubling.

Well, I don't believe for a minute his claim that his memory improved and that he wants to go with his most recent interview on this issue than his first couple of interviews. I think since the settlement included a gag order that the story really couldn't become public. His first reaction was to say that if there is an accuser, let them come forward (knowing that there is a gag order, and the accuser could not come forward without getting into a lot of trouble).

Not a very well thought through strategy, though. The story definitely can see the light of day without the accuser being a named source to the story.

But then again, maybe Clinton should have thought things through a little more before saying publicly that he did not have sexual relations with "that woman"!

I think being bad at covering up sexual escapades (whether criminal or consensual) doesn't rule one out for high political office.

I think offering outrageous economic policy does.

The CBO says that Cain's long-term projections of his economic plan are some 15% more optimistic than in their own judgement. (And if anything, the CBO is itself guilty of being too Pollyannnaish in general!)

Had a chat with a friend of mine who is a former state's attorney from WV. He says that if there were a confidentiality agreement, Cain has most likely broken it with his statements, and that the women involved will be able to petition the court to speak if they wish.

*facepalm*

This moron is the leading contender for the Republican party now?

Some days I think that as a species we're doomed :boggled:

China's got the bomb? You're yanking my Cain! Next thing you'll be telling me is that they've put someone in space.

More polititainment from the Candy Cain:
In an interview Monday, Cain said part of China's threat to the United States stems from its attempts to develop nuclear weapons
He'll wave that away in 2 seconds flat:
What Herman will say said:
I was talking about China expanding their nuclear capabilities.

If he's smart, he'll avoid that and say that by "capability" he meant nuclear powered naval craft.

But since he isn't, he'll probably say it was a joke and that the problem is that we all lack a sense of humor.

ETA: Actually, he can stand by what he said.

Their nuclear weapons are in fact the result of their (successful) attempts (back in the early days of the Cold War) to develop nuclear weapons, and I would agree that their nuclear weapons are part of China's threat to the U.S.

So Cain was talking about "developing" nuclear weapons the same way some women talk about "developing" their bust. Or in this case, boom.

"Maybe I misspoke," he said. "What I meant was China does not have the size of the nuclear capability that we have. They do have a nuclear capability. I was talking about their total nuclear capability."

Maybe he confused North Korea with China?

-- The Chinese government is not trying to reach numerical parity with the U.S. nuclear weapons arsenal and does not have the nuclear material to do so, according to a briefing paper released today by the Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS). The paper also found that China’s recent changes to its nuclear forces are intended to ensure they will survive an attack, preserve its ability to retaliate, and are not focused on increasing its offensive capability.
