On the Cain Train

I also think that #2 is at play.
The (presumed) fact that he's pandering doesn't blow my mind. What blows my mind is that he fundamentally doesn't understand the abortion debate. That is very strange, presumably.

I like Herman Cain. He's funny.
Me too, in a twisted way.

And I am sure he isn't even serious about becoming president and so he's seeing just how far he can laugh at everyone who takes him seriously.
At the start, I think he was more about selling books than becoming POTUS. But then he found himself on top of the polls, and that's gotta be a heady experience, especially for a narcissist. If it's true he was laughing, I'll bet he's not laughing anymore. One's sense of humor tends to deflate when one finds a microscope rammed up one's *******.

I know 9-9-9 goes elsewhere. But I thought 9-0-9 proved that he's just testing the waters for what will get votes; he has not really thought these things through.

We're all accustomed to politicians twisting the facts, and even lying outright. But the lies would at least have a facade. But now in the Tea Party age, when the "lamestream media" is dismissed with the wave of an arm, and they're playing to an audience of the same mindset, who needs a facade anymore?

Herman ran for senate in GA in 2004, which he mentioned in his interview with Piers Morgan:

Cain: I ran for the United States Senate in 2004, came in an impressive second.

Morgan: Did you say impressive second?

Cain: Impressive second ... I came within 2 percentage points.

Herman, I'd like to introduce you to reality and vice versa. 2004 GA primary results:

Isakson: 53.2%
Cain: 26.2%

I mean really, wtf?

(you never know what might be culled from the Puzzles section ;))

He meant to say "digits" not points. He had the same number of percentage digits as the winner.

Despite being the chief executive officer of the National Restaurant Association, he said he was unaware of any settlement with the accusers, though he didn't deny it.

"If the restaurant association did a settlement, I wasn't even aware of it," he claimed, "and I hope it wasn't for much. If there was a settlement, it was handled by some of the other officers at the restaurant association."
.

I have trouble beleiving that he was "unaware."

As crazy as it sounds, it is probably actually losing him some votes among the eschatologically minded, an important part of the republican base.

Of course, there are plenty of sane reasons to hate the plan as well.

No, he now admits that he was accused; he still denies that he harassed.

It is true, at least that his story keeps changing.

1. Politico allegations are false. Story is crap.

2. Yes, there were allegations. But they were false.

3. Yes there were allegations that were false and I don’t know what money was paid.

4. I don’t know whether money was paid. And it would be wrong for me to find out whether money was paid because it’s confidential.

5. There was an in-depth investigation. And I was cleared. But I don’t know anything about it.

6. Here’s the gesture that led to my getting accused of harassment.

7. Okay, I remember some discussion of a settlement number.

Indeed, I've been noticing these hour by hour movements. And if I read Herman correctly, there's now:

8. I knew there was a settlement, I don't know the details, I wasn't in the loop [paraphrase]

Add: what he actually said:
Cain said:
It started out where she wanted a lot of money. I don't even remember what that amount was. But because it was baseless and it was shown that it was not true, she ended up leaving with several months severance, which would have been what she would have left with if we had involuntarily dismissed her. I don't know if it was three months, whether it was two months, it might have been six months. I don't think it was because of the way it was settled.
