Merged Steve Jobs has died.

No, that sucks too.

Now take The Onion's take...Panicking Apple Board Of Directors Attempts To Restart Steve Jobs

Now that's how it's done. But that's why they write satire for a living and you are content with putting an "i" before a word and calling it a day.

I believe he called it an iDay.

This!

You'd think they'd actually worship the Brit designer who was actually responsible for all the Apple products they eulogise over.

When a big design house has a runway show, all the designs are under then name of the guy who founded the design house and who selects and informs the designs.

This is no different.

And the contribution of that founder is usually not negligible.

They're still within $10 billion of each other, which isn't a huge difference between two ~$350 billion companies.

ExxonMobil still holds the World Record for highest quarterly profit by a publically listed company, though. It's from the days of $150/barrel oil; Apple isn't even particularly close.

It's not that hard to make money when it is pumped up out of the ground...

I disagree with that in regards to the scenes we are seeing. He got a bit of media attention (as a person) at best twice a year with the launch of something, so I don't think he can be likened to a media celebrity.

I don't think the fact that he got media attention just a couple of times a year made any difference to his charisma; if anything it just made his appearances more keenly sought (amongst those who sought 'em).

No, no. I did a market survey and iDied is absolutely the right thing. I even tried it out in a meeting of 35 people this morning and the timing between saying it and their moment of realization was perfect. It's in the juxtaposition of the 'i' and 'Died' and sounding like I Died but playing off of the iPhone and iPad.

The Onion one fell flat.

Steve Jobs (Stanford Commencement Speech 2005):

"No one wants to die. Even people who want to go to heaven don't want to die to get there. And yet death is the destination we all share. No one has ever escaped it. And that is as it should be, because Death is very likely the single best invention of Life. It is Life's change agent. It clears out the old to make way for the new."

Nothing to add.

Jobs was a Buddhist vegetarian. He was secretive about his health:

I had heard that he did eat fish which makes him a pescetarian. A diet he may have chosen for it's reputed health benefits and numerous life extension anecdotes.

Seriously?

Yes.

His name is Steven Jobs.
I know that bit. Not really something he did though.

A significant portion of the planet knows his name and identifies with his products. He was almost singularly good at creating demand for his products.

So? He's a good marketer? And how much are they "his" products really?

I don't give a crap about him myself,

Nor do I. I can sympathize that the guy died.

and I don't really care about Apple products specifically,

I own a few Apple products. They're quite good.

but I can't think of anyone that has recently been more successful at inventing problems for their solutions.

:D

Think about it. The flagships of Apples line of products (Ipod, Iphone, and Ipad) are not really that much better at most functions than the offerings of other companies, and in some regards they are inferior.

Agreed.

Yet, they enjoy a cult-like following, and Steve Jobs was most responsible for the mass appeal of these products. Had he not returned to Apple, there might still have been an iPod/Pad/Phone, but it is far from certain they would have been the market leaders they currently are.

Yes but what exactly did he actually do to generate this "cult like following"? I'm still trying to work out what we're supposed to be lauding him for aside from being somehow able to sell heaters in the sahara.

I don't want to step on anyone, but I'd dislike the hagiography that comes with the passing of celebrities. Hence the posting of "Everyone's a great bloke when they're dead" YT link earlier.

Honoring him more than that Jack Ass guy who died recently seems reasonable.

I wonder, though, is anyone getting his liver?

One day some of us should picket the westboro church, by having sex in front of it, or doing some gluttony or whatever as long as it is sinful and make them rage.

That's great that the Westboro Baptist Church tweeted that from their iPhone.

I really hope someone kicks the crap out of Fred Phelps one day. Not a jury in the land would convict.

this is coming from someone usually fairly unimpressed with Apple, but he should be recognized for at least the following:

He was one of the creative and business people behind one of the first affordable home computers.

His company, and his innovations, helped popularize the graphical user interface, moving computers from the command line to what they look like today.

While head of Apple, he supplied the creative vision that led to the popularization of the following things:

portable music players
online music sale through micropayments
the telephone as portable media device and Internet device (the "smartphone")
Tablet computing

he didn't invent any of these things, but his company helped make them popular.

I personally think his company had a bit of a personality cult around him, but he did a lot that helped shape the personal computing world.
