London John, everyday I came here I searched for your posts. Thanks again.

This is a great day. My headach is unbelievable, but it was worth it to wait. Thank you judge Hellmann!!!

so basically they thought they were guilty but they didn't have enough evidence.

There was a very good interview with CDV on the BBC. Also with Bongiorno, but as she doesn't speak English, I think some was lost in translation.

I would point out that the announcement, according to the live translation broadcast by the BBC, said not guilty by reason of not having committed the crime. That was very clear. Nothing said about insufficient evidence.

BBC also said the passport issue had been sorted out in advance, by the embassy. I gather embassy officials visited the prison to get the application processed.

ETA: And I think I get dibs on being the first one here to have posted that it was not guilty by reason of not having committed the crime.

Apparently, the Daily Mail accidentally posted the story they had written for a guilty verdict. Link dead now - hope someone got a screen shot :)

Sky News in the UK had a similar massive error: it posted a huge banner graphic at the bottom of the screen saying something like "KNOX GUILT CONFIRMED" while Hellmann was dealing with the Lumumba slander charges. It is clear that whoever posted that banner thought that Knox had been found guilty on the murder charges. The banner changed to "KNOX CLEARED OF MURDER" within 30 seconds. It was a proper fiasco, and I suspect there will be some repercussions at Sky over the embarrassing gaffe.

One would have hoped that such huge errors were long gone since the days that the Chicago Tribune ran with "Dewey defeats Truman" in 1948, but such incompetence is alive and well, it seems.

Finally justice has been found in Italy. Knox and Sollecito have been found NOT GUILTY. Meredith can finally rest in peace. To those who believe in Knox and Sollecito's guilt all I have to say is this: I feel sorry for you. I feel sorry that you have been manipulated by the police and prosecution to believe in their lies. But the judge saw past them and the truth has set them free. Maybe someday you can finally figure out you too were lied to and then maybe your anger will shift from the innocent Knox and Sollecitio to the guilty police and prosecution.

I really dont understand why so many of you are so upset. Did you not read the independent DNA report? Did you not think the judge would take the scientists HE APPOINTED word as fact? Did you not understand that there never was Meredith's DNA on the knife? Did you not comprehend all the evidence in the first trial was obliterated in the appeal? Did you not recognize the Italian media has always known before anything official happened at any point in the trials what the verdict would be. I guess you didnt.

Although honestly the charge for slandering Lumumba should have been chucked as well. Of course the whole concept of speech being criminal is anti-liberty anyway. This whole case has really brought home how important freedom of speech and freedom of the press actually are. I'm confident if Italy actually had free speech that the cops wouldn't have gotten away with this to begin with.

I'm not at all surprised about the slander charge -- it was a face-saving gesture by Hellmann and the only out for the Perugian cops. Now they can point to the slander charge and say: "See! We acted in good faith. Mistakes were made but at least we tried." It also innoculates Hellmann against the charge that he was biased against Massei's court from the start.

Yessssssssssssssssssss!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Now get out of that sheep herders town and backward country.

Come back to civilization...remember even da Vinci escaped to France in his later years.

I saved the complete HTML and the screenshot. If someone else hasn't already, I'll post it when things calm down around here.

At first I thought Hellman was reading out the original judgement of the Massei court. By the time I realised it was his own judgement, I had heard the part about the calumny charge. At that point, I realised that if his first announcement was guilty of calumny and sentenced to three years, then he was going to find not guilty of the rest, and by then of course he was reading that bit.

The BBC did right just to broadcast the translator and not put anything on the ticker until he'd finished. But it was a little misleading, the way he started by saying guilty.

And the BBC is sticking with "guilty by reason of not having committed the crime."

Sweet Mary and Joseph! Luisa Baldini - who's leading up the BBC coverage, and who's Italian by descent - is saying that there are "six jurors", who decide the case on a majority view, and who are "directed" by the judges. You really would think that the BBC's anchorperson for the coverage would take the trouble to understand the composition of the judicial panel. Shockingly unprofessional and ignorant commentary.....

This is what we expect when the coverage is as big as it is, solely due to the appearance of the parties involved. Cute = ratings. Not cute = no story.

lovely place we're in these days.

At least the slowdown is not on my end. Guess I'll just try to post later. :D

Kudos to you for starting this thread. Yes Amanda was convicted (in the first trial) for nothing more serious than doing a cartwheel in a police station (and a few other odd things. Your OP created a forum where the truth was aired about the case and in some small way improved the chances for AK to be freed. Job well done by you and all the other many posters here.

Also: CONGRATULATIONS TO AMANDA AND RAFFAELE ON BEING FREE AT LAST!

Thanks for stopping by! :D

There are PLENTY of people who are glad of that fact.:)

The comments at PMF display their vile hatred which is misguided for some and simply disgusting for others. The VAST majority of the misfits are claiming that they are appalled and shocked at the verdict.

Deluded muppets would be more than an apt description.

Justice has been done.

Gloating is poor form..

Some things should be celebrated. The finding of the truth, the defeat of evil, the end of a witch hunt, the hard-won freedom of two innocent young people, these are all things that I believe we should make time to enjoy and to remark upon.

Should we enjoy the meltdowns the guilters are suffering? That's a tougher question. There's no question that if anybody deserves it they do, in spades. The best of them are malignant idiots and the worst of them are beyond vile. But does anyone deserve to suffer? That's a deep question.

Then again maybe even if they don't deserve to suffer, we deserve some enjoyment for having had to put up with that lot existing on the same planet as us? They're a thoroughly obnoxious bunch of irrational, witch-hunting creeps who exemplify the human evils which the Enlightenment stands against. We've put up with them for a long time so maybe the universe owes the righteous some pleasure in return. That too is a deep question.

However in the end while schadenfreude is a great start to the day, it couldn't possibly compare to the pleasure I'd take in seeing Ganong, Quennel and "The Machine" dragged out into the light of day and sued until there's nothing left but a smoking crater where their bank accounts used to be.
