Continuation Part 3 - Discussion of the Amanda Knox case

Saw it on BBC News 24, after much frustration waiting for new websites to update. Switched on just in time to see the Knox family hugging.

Sad to see the reaction outside the court from locals booing the verdict.

Don't know how your stoicism is holding up, LondonJohn, but right now I am unashamedly crying.

Not that I had any rational doubts, but you were right, of course. And anyone with an ounce of sense knew who the true "loons" were, all along.

Been a tonic reading you, here. I'm out.

Yes!!!!!! I just managed to log in!!!

Thank you London John for the confidence you gave me and many others.

Justice has been served. Let's be happy!!!!!!

YAY!!!!!!!

Oh and special greetings for The Machine.

Yay! I was really worried but they finally got it right.

Although honestly the charge for slandering Lumumba should have been chucked as well. Of course the whole concept of speech being criminal is anti-liberty anyway. This whole case has really brought home how important freedom of speech and freedom of the press actually are. I'm confident if Italy actually had free speech that the cops wouldn't have gotten away with this to begin with.

PMF / TJMK and other creeps

Lol...PMF is in meltdown!

The BBC are biased...CBS is biased...the whole Media is biased....etc etc etc

Here's a beauty from The (would-be) Bard:

''Ok everyone. Message from SomeAlibi

He says Remember

There are verdicts
And there is the truth
Sometimes the two meet, sometimes not.

I found that very helpful''

:D:D:D:D:D

Yep - loads of backtracking and whinging and....oh...I can't be bothered at the moment.

Oh look, who's that walking off into the sunset....shrugging his shoulders!!??
:D:D:D

so basically they thought they were guilty but they didn't have enough evidence.

i'm happy for all you peeps :) i feared what would happen if it went the other way.

I hope the poster who had champaign on ice in the fridge is enjoying it lol

Where do you get that little nugget of "wisdom"? I would suggest that people now start to become rather careful of calling Knox or Sollecito murderers who got away with it.

And most of the media have little or no idea over the function of the Supreme Court in a criminal case such as this. They are conveying the impression that the prosecution can appeal Hellmann's verdict to the Supreme Court in a similar way to the way in which the case was referred to Hellmann's court after the Massei verdict. In fact, any appeal to the Supreme Court can only be on grounds of misapplication of law or judicial procedures in the lower courts. And I don't believe that prosecutors will be able to find any grounds whatsoever for even submitting an appeal to the Supreme Court.

Knox and Sollecito have been correctly and justly acquitted of the murder of Meredith Kercher. There is not (and never was) anything like sufficient evidence that they were involved, and in fact the totality of the evidence actually tends to suggest that Knox and Sollecito had no involvement whatsoever in the murder. I think it's a shame that the Lumumba slander charge stood - I think that this was an unjust guilty verdict, but I strongly doubt whether Knox will care too much about that. And Sollecito is totally and utterly exonerated. Meredith Kercher was killed by only one person, Rudy Guede. It's time that everyone - including the Kerchers - came to understand that.

Damn. Gazumped. I'll raise you Fidelio.

O welche Lust, in freier Luft
Den Atem leicht zu heben!
Nur hier, nur hier ist Leben!
Der Kerker eine Gruft.

Wir wollen mit Vertrauen
Auf Gottes Hilfe bauen!
Die Hoffnung flüstert sanft mir zu:
Wir werden frei, wir finden Ruh

O Himmel! Rettung! Welch ein Glück!
O Freiheit! Kehrst du zurück?

There was some talk that Amanda's passport has expired. If that's the case, what's her best option? Go straight to the American Embassy until it's worked out?

Glad to see justice finally prevailed.

Congratulations, Amanda and Raffaele!!!:D:D:D Had a hard time getting any post to take. Guess we are all posting at once. Justice, sweet justice!

Apparently, the Daily Mail accidentally posted the story they had written for a guilty verdict. Link dead now - hope someone got a screen shot :)

You're welcome. As I said before, I had very little doubt that the verdict would be anything other than acquittal as soon as the Conti/Vecchiotti report was released, and my opinion strengthened to no doubt once the prosecutors and civil party lawyers had made their closing arguments. I knew that we - the outsiders - had enough information to be able to make a properly informed decision. I was confident enough of my own reasoning to stick my neck out and state unequivocally that acquittals were inevitable.

I am satisfied that I was correct, and I'm deeply satisfied that the collective wisdom and judgement on this thread has been fully vindicated - but it's no time for jubilation or partisan points-scoring. I hope that some of the more rabid pro-guilt commentators will come to terms with the fact that they were either unable or unwilling to analyse this case properly or objectively, and that they will perhaps take some time to reflect on what they wrote over the past few years.

As a small aside, I just heard Becky Anderson on CNN getting the Supreme Court issue wrong yet again. The facts on the Supreme Court are as follows: prosecutors can only appeal to the Supreme Court if there are valid grounds, and those grounds can only be on the application of law (and not on findings of fact). If the Supreme Court agrees to hear an appeal, it will be done in camera: Knox and Sollecito will not be required to appear. And the most the Supreme Court could do would be to refer the case back down to the appeal court level for a retrial - at which Knox and Sollecito would of course be required to appear. But as I cannot see any possible way in which prosecutors have any sort of grounds for appealing to the Supreme Court, I think it's all totally moot. I am guessing that there will be no appeal to the Supreme Court.
