I believe Bill originally brought up Lincoln vs. the Catholics as an argument from authority, in the rough form of 'If a man like Abraham Lincoln can hate a whole religion, it can't be intrinsically wrong to hate a whole religion'. Not only is the claim of Lincoln's anti-catholicism untrue as far as any reliable evidence can be found on it, if it were true, it means nothing, because Lincoln isn't an appropriate authority on such matters.
I really don't care if Lincoln was anti-Catholic, I just see no reason to think it was the case.
