"Properly read, the Bible is the most potent force for atheism ever conceived."

Issac Asimov.
I guess the 40 or so presidents (including Jimmy Carter and Barack Obama) who claimed to members of the Christian faith never properly read it.

Believe it or not, DOC, what various Presidents of your precious theocracy do for the sake of political expediency has absolutely nothing to do with the beliefs of the vast majority of the world's six billion inhabitants, and it's breathtakingly arrogant that you would think it did.

Until the advent of modern conveniences, people pretty much stayed close to home. Travel was a big deal and inconvenient. Entertainment, compared to today, was limited (reading, writing letters, drinking, storytelling, whatever). Most people lived in small communities or in small neighborhoods of larger cities. Socialization was also limited and people took advantage of anything that got them together with others (can't get laid if you stay on the farm {at least by humans}). Church, town meetings, harvest fairs/markets, and fraternal groups were pretty much it.

You pretty much had to belong to a church and if you didn't attend, your neighbors would know. Not belonging or not attending was suspicious. I wouldn't put much stock into US presidents proclaiming them selves Christian as they are politicians. They, more than most, must look like they fit in.

I would not be surprised if the majority of people throughout history just paid lip service to the local religion so as not to be ostracized or worse. Hell, where else were you going to meet chicks?

It is apparent that many people who claim to be members of the Christian faith have never properly read it.

And?

They obviously never read the thing properly cover to cover. :p

Extremely hard for a USA candidate for the Presidency to admit to been atheist and get elected.

And, you ask, and this:

I probably haven't read every word of the bible,

DOC is a hypocrite and a fraud. I'm getting really bored of him, his lies, his lack of integrity and his bullpoo.

I'm not sure that I'd seen that post, but it is pretty obvious from what DOC has posted in various threads that he is one of them.

ETA: or that he has a very poor memory.

Are you claiming that the presidents who owned slaves and the founding fathers who supported slavery read the bible properly?

Akhenaten gazes into crystal ball . . .

Well at least one President described the Bible as the most moral and sublime teachings ever preached to humanity and cut 900 verses out with a razor and pasted them in a book.

To which, one could easily point out....
You mean the guy who slept with his slave?

It's "40 or so" now? Which ones are you excluding this time?

Jefferson certainly wasn't a Christian. Lincoln probably wasn't since he doubted the supernatural nature of Jesus. It's up in the air on Washington. I think anyone who says they know GW's religious beliefs is fooling themselves. Monroe was a Unitarian. Both the Adams were Unitarians as well.

Oh, I'm sure we can make lists of the likely candidates, but I'd like DOC to answer the question with his reasons, something which he seems unwilling to do despite having been asked more than once before.

Charles Darwin was a fundamental christian at one time as well. It proves that even geniuses can sometimes be wrong. That's all!

This argument from authority logical fallacy has been refuted every single time it's been used. You know it doesn't carry any weight here. It's been pointed out every which way why its fallacious. Honestly, why did you use it again? I can only think of breath-taking ignorance combined with an unwillingness and/or inability to accept certain realities or a dogged intellectual dishonestly. Please give a third option...please.

(certain realities = the unacceptability of an argument, nothing more).
