Boycott Israel

I just learned that the Israeli government passed a law last night that makes calling for a boycott against an Israeli company by anyone in Israel or in a region controlled by Israel actionable by lawsuit.

For example, if a Palestinian X calls for a boycott of Israeli company Y in an illegal Israeli settlement, company Y may sue Palestinian X.

This new law is being protested, of course.

I urge a boycott of all goods and services produced by all Israeli companies.

And further US financial support for Israel?

Not another bloody cent.

There are many reason a boycott of Israel product can be seen as stupid, but most of the one in the video are incorrect. Some of the example inside are for example simple localization and not local production sent worldwide. others are historical knowledge, and some are pure godwin as far as i can tell.

Should I just call you an anti-Semite now? Get it out of the way before you get hit by rabid foam and a block of raging text.

That stuff stings if it gets in your eyes.

PS - For those slow on the uptake: I do not find Aepervius to be an Anti-Semite.

I'm pretty sure I don't own a single Israeli thing at all.

But that's too bad about this law. The sad irony of Israel turning to fascism.

Haven't watched a video on these forums in a few years. Don't plan to start now.

Rarely follow links, either.

Use your words, or don't bother.

If you feel you must, by all means do so. (ETA: I'm not assuming that you are advocating calling me an anti-Semite)

I don't think I am, but that often doesn't matter.

I've been opposed to the behavior of the Israeli government for a long time - I think they have behaved abominably in some regards. I'm very much opposed to the settlers in illegal settlements who are trying to present the world with a fait accompli. Many Israelis are similarly upset, including many of Jewish ancestry. Are they anti-Semites?

I'm opposed to all religious belief. Does that make me racist in any way? Anti-Semitism would be a variety of racism.

I'm not condemning an ethnicity, I'm condemning some of the behaviors of the government of a country and the behaviors of some of the people who live in that country and in lands occupied by that country. Does that make me a racist, an anti-Semite?

Don't care how long you've been lazy.

Please list the things from Israel that you are choosing to do without.

You say lazy; I say that I'm thoughtful about how I spend my time and what I let into my head.

I am far more interested in working against organizations that are supportive of the government of Israel and its policies. This includes the US and its outrageous financial, military, and political support of Israel.

I have started looking into businesses that I have investments in to see the extent of their involvement and/or support for Israel.

I shall never visit Israel again. I spent two weeks there several years ago. Not again.

I doubt that I am a consumer of any products that are imported from Israel. I think it likely, however, that some of the companies whose products that I do buy have strong ties with and/or support for the the government of Israel and its policies. This is another area that I plan to investigate.

I hope to see support for Israel and its policies decrease in the US - not because of any of my actions but because of disgust.

I hope to reduce my inadvertent support for Israel by becoming more informed.

So which other countries are you boycotting? Iran? Saudi Arabia? Syria? Pakistan? Lebanon?

Oddly enough, it is already illegal for companies in the US to boycott Israel or assist countries that boycott Israel:
http://www.bis.doc.gov/complianceandenforcement/antiboycottcompliance.htm

...The Bureau is charged with administering and enforcing the Antiboycott Laws under the Export Administration Act. Those laws discourage, and in some circumstances, prohibit U.S. companies from furthering or supporting the boycott of Israel sponsored by the Arab League, and certain Moslem countries, including complying with certain requests for information designed to verify compliance with the boycott. Compliance with such requests may be prohibited by the Export Administration Regulations (EAR) and may be reportable to the Bureau.

...The antiboycott laws were adopted to encourage, and in specified cases, require U.S. firms to refuse to participate in foreign boycotts that the United States does not sanction. They have the effect of preventing U.S. firms from being used to implement foreign policies of other nations which run counter to U.S. policy.

I'm not really sure how this is all that different from what Israel just passed, except the US law seems more geared toward companies rather than individuals. I don't see anything in the US law that prevents its use from an individual if they wanted to though.

I don't like this law at all because it's a law against free speech, as opposed to action. What's more it's absurd, since it is, of course, legal for anyone to boycott -- that is, not buy -- products from the settlements, or products beginning with the letter "A". So it makes it illegal to call for something that is perfectly legal to do. Besides, it is also a stupid law. It takes no genius to realize its sole practical effect is likely to be making martyrs of those who call for a boycott.
