Vegan/vegetarian at TAM9

And ales. :)

I have no idea what kind/brand/species of tofu I've tried on the numerous occasions I've tasted it, all I know is that all of them tasted like rubber. I'd compare it to wine - I don't like the taste of wine. I've had bottles from $4 to $100+, red, white, whatever, so I'm quite sure I've tried a broad range of wines. I didn't/don't like any of them, because they taste like wine. As they should, because they are...well...wine. But that never stops well meaning people from insisting that the reason I don't like wine is that I've never had good wine, so try this one, which I do, and have to break the news to them that I don't like it, because, like all the wines before it, it tastes like....wine.

TCS, I'd like to invite you to the "Fiestas de la Vendimia" in my town. It's a month long wine fest in August. Lots of beautiful women, and partying going on. Lots of wine too. You know why I'd love to have you here? Because I love whine with my wine, and since I love it so much, I'd love to have more whine with my wine while I enjoy some more wine with your whine. :p

I'll go have an all veggie meal if a veggie person comes with us on our new (currently 1.5 confirmed people) meat eating adventure. Heck I'll even buy you a drink or three or a veggie appetizer (if there is such a thing at the place we decide to go.)

I'd only ask that if it comes up, there would be polite debate over whether you think I'm an evil person for eating meat. I will be polite and respectful, and open to new perspectives (though it would be hard to overcome the taste of bacon), but I'll react in kind if my morals are challenged aggressively :)

Awesome! So far we have two folks offering rides, one has room for 4 and the other for 2-3. Definitely let me know, it would be nice to not have anyone have to take a taxi. We have around a dozen folks on facebook that RSVPed and a handful of others from twitter or other forums going, plus some locals too I think.

I have not made my rental car reservation, yet. But, when I do, it will hold as many passengers as I can get, so it can be effectively used for the Red Rocks tour.

Hopefully, I'll be able to decide on the final plan, tonight. It's parameters keep changing.

You called it!

you know there already is a counter-balance to the veg meet-up...Penn's bacon party...which i still may attend

And no I don't think you are evil (don't really believe in the concept), we just have a difference in ethics or morals (which ultimately rest on subjective values)...but I think many of us can recognize that society doesn't function on total moral relativism and that denouements of certain behavior and even restrictions of action are at sometimes justified or at least broadly socially accepted. But lets save this for TAM...or another thread, dont wish to derail this to much

I highly suspect there will be some evil things going on at Penn's bacon party.... But, I'll probably go it it, anyway. Parts of it should be fun.

As someone who hates all forms of alcoholic beverages and routinely gets incredulous reactions about that fact, I really sympathize. I've tasted a variety of alcoholic drinks, and I disliked every single one of them (I'd go so far as to say I hated most -- though some are vaguely drinkable but still nothing I'd pay money for). But do I still get people who tell me "oh, but you should try X or Y or Z, it really doesn't taste like alcohol at all!"? All the time. :)

Yep, happened again last night. Was at a restaurant with friends and they ordered an appetizer of mussels for the table, I told them I wasn't interested, as I don't care for sea food. Of course then I had to hear about how someone's sister in law didn't like sea food, but she did like some seafood dish this person made for them, and that was somehow (I guess) supposed to convince me that I really would like something I don't like. Or something. It puzzles me why someone would try to convince someone else to like something they like.

Can you let us know when you make your decision? The suspense is killing me!

It's because of the desire to share enjoyment with others you care about. Granted some people may go a bit far, but I don't see how this is a puzzling sentiment.

I can see asking once, but when someone says "no thanks, I don't care for fish/beer/wine/tofu/whatever", why not just let it go?

Well, cheers to your way of thinking, I feel quite the same way.

I'd offer another thought that sort of relates to the point Scrut has been making, and this may seem obvious, but I think one's view on tastiness is really just based on what they're used to.

For example, I never thought I would enjoy Diet beverages - until I was forced to switch (basically my teeth were rotting away from drinking sugar all day while at my PC). Now, I really don't like sugar based beverages very much.

So I'm pretty sure if I wanted to, I could make myself not only accepting, but loving of a veggie diet. So much so that I may be the type to try to convince Scrut that THIS tofu dish is the one that would turn him :)

as far as taste...i hated vegetables and mushrooms as a kid

since going vegan i eat far more vegetables and fungi both in volume and variety and actually enjoy ones i used to detest like broccoli

ive heard that growing into the taste of vegetable is a common experience for adults, so it may not be directly caused by the dietary switch and lack of other food options

There's a more exact/correct way to explain this, but...

Kids need more energy to grow and sugary/sweet things have more calories, so most kids naturally have a taste for sweeter thing instead of bitter (like broccoli). As adults your tastebuds change because your body needs less energy.
