Vegan/vegetarian at TAM9

I've had bottles from $4 to $100+, red, white, whatever, so I'm quite sure I've tried a broad range of wines. I didn't/don't like any of them, because they taste like wine. As they should, because they are...well...wine. But that never stops well meaning people from insisting that the reason I don't like wine is that I've never had good wine, so try this one, which I do, and have to break the news to them that I don't like it, because, like all the wines before it, it tastes like....wine.

I get the same reaction with fish. I just don't like any fish (neither do my brothers and sisters -- probably something in our childhood). Everyone tells me I just haven't tried the right grilled salmon or whatever it is they love. I'll be a sport and try it, but honestly it just taste gross to me -- because it's fish and (duh) it tastes like fish.

My brother just tells everyone he's allergic and that seems to work much better. I'm not as smart as him, obviously.

Yep, same here. It all tastes like fish to me. And I don't like fish.

Then I guess the only thing I can offer you is my sympathy to never know the culinary bliss that sushi can be when just the right flavors are combined.

I think that your post is another example of knix in a twist.

Various cultures, including the Chinese and Japanese, have a long history of making things that 'taste like meat' but are not meat.

....

I personally think people have some fixed ideology that filters their experience of vegetarian food.

Yes, I agree with you, people do have a fixed ideaology about food. How much someone enjoys food has a lot to do with their perception of it. Which is why I said that the reason people do not like "vegan" food is because it has a label attached to it which they associate with earlier, often disgusting, attempts at meat subsitutes. Also, Asian cultures have a long history of doing plenty of things, but... I was talking mainly about current Western cultures.

um the keynote is on friday, this event is on saturday...
truthfully youre the only one so far who has expressed concern that the location and time are not ideal (i know neither are ideal but they were the best options) If you have another suggestion on location (i was considering just doing it at the bar) and time that would be helpful and Ill consider it.

First off, I was talking about Tyson. Secondly, I wasn't trying to be nitpicky btw, I honestly would like to go... but I've heard others, who have gone to previous TAMs, complain about the short amount of time allowed for dinner is not long enough to go out anywhere to eat. This is my first TAM, so I'm not sure of a better location. Many people are not going to the Workshops on Thursday, so that may be a good time as well, or if Atomic #7 is open late enough, some people might enjoy a late-night ice cream snack after Tyson's talk.

I dont see what negative ethical implications or negative effects on others that someone eating beans mashed into the shape of a burger has that would cause other people to care about it.
Nothing negative at al about that, until said person eating said burger shaped things insists on telling someone that it tastes just like a burger and attempts to get them to eat it instead of the burger they wanted in the first place.

I say we encourage the OP to request a vegan bacon option from Penn, and record his response. Should be entertaining.

Tell him it's for ethical reasons too... I have the feeling his response would be something like BBQ'ing 1500 new born baby pigs in front of everyone and serving them whole on a stick.

yes and Tyson is speaking on Friday, the veg meet-up is on Saturday, no one is speaking Saturday at 6:30...am I missing something
the closest event is Dawkins speaking at 8pm on Saturday, i jsut though people could leave before hand, but I will take into consideration the travel time, ect.
Thursday wouldn't work because two of the other first people on board said it was a bad day for them and one of them was the guy who asked me to organize the event.
This is my first TAM, Atomic#7 was suggested by another previous TAM goer with an offer to drive so that why it was chosen...it is open till 10:30 I think though

Seems like a lot of hassle to go through for fake ice cream, when the real thing is steps from the Del-Mar lounge. :)

I have never been all that keen on fish either, until I had fresh grilled tuna steaks.

Flipping yum. They really don't taste all that fishy.

The fish as in fish and chips and fish sticks have made me vomit on several occasions, so I have stopped eating them.

Tuna, no issue.

I would recommend you try the fresh tuna steaks with mango chutney in Rarotonga.

Well then, I'd love to go. But you don't have a table... I'm not sure this counts as an actual event without a table. :)

So I updated the schedule, We will be MEETING AT THE DEL MAR after Dawkin's speech around 6pm, after folks are gather we shall leave for Atomic#7 around 6:30 probably, give or take, so if you NEED A RIDE OR CAN OFFER A RIDE or would like to share a taxi meet us at the Del Mar, otherwise you can always just meet us at Atomic#7.

I might be able to provide a ride. I will try to give you my answer tonight, after I outline everything else on the schedule.

Awesome! So far we have two folks offering rides, one has room for 4 and the other for 2-3. Definitely let me know, it would be nice to not have anyone have to take a taxi. We have around a dozen folks on facebook that RSVPed and a handful of others from twitter or other forums going, plus some locals too I think.

I'd compare it to wine - I don't like the taste of wine. I've had bottles from $4 to $100+, red, white, whatever, so I'm quite sure I've tried a broad range of wines. As someone who hates all forms of alcoholic beverages and routinely gets incredulous reactions about that fact, I really sympathize. I've tasted a variety of alcoholic drinks, and I disliked every single one of them (I'd go so far as to say I hated most -- though some are vaguely drinkable but still nothing I'd pay money for). But do I still get people who tell me "oh, but you should try X or Y or Z, it really doesn't taste like alcohol at all!"? All the time. :)
