The Tommy Sheridan Trial

News of the World being underhand? Well there is a surprise, and they are giving News International a monopoly in TV in this country.

I personally thought Tommy and the SSP were a breath of fresh air in politics, now we have the same old boring non-descript waste of living matter sitting in Holyrood. Obviously we could not have someone passionate about what they stand for like Tommy and Gorgeous George. The grey men win and we get stupid, expensive and pointless motorway extensions and unneeded bridges.

Anyway, I miss seeing him about the campus, he always returned the clenched fist salute, and was funny to see what shade of orange he would be.
 
Story is now that emails passed to police suggesting Coulson paid them for stories.

If true, did he perjure himself? If so, will Tommy keep a cell warm for him?

News International has outsourced their IT function to the Indian Subcontinent. When e-mails are deleted from a person's individual mailbox, they may still be on the mail server, they will certainly be on backups of the mail server.

When asked to retrieve the backups, or access the deleted messages, the Indian company were unable to do so for one or more of the following reasons:
  • They didn't know how to
  • It was out of the scope of their contract
  • The e-mails were genuinely unavailable becuase of some technical SNAFU
  • Thery were encouraged to misplace them by News International

Sounds like they had one of the conversations I have had all too often:

MD - "Wow we can outsource all that and they can do it at a fraction of the cost we can - how can they do that!?"

My answer: "They can't."

It makes perfect sense that they can store documents cheaper as long as you don't confuse the ability to store documents with the ability to retrieve them.

There's a disused aircraft hanger in the North West of England which has paper copies of all design documents ever produced and issues, at all versions, for all major IT projects for the period 1980 - 1997 (to my knowledge, it may be later). This contains literally tens of millions of pages, in boxes, badly labelled.

The documents are stored, but to all practical intents irretrievable.

Hi, new to this thread. Know nothing of Scottish politics and not much about Tommy S, but fascinated by hubris: Osacr Wilde, Horatio Bottomley, Jeffrey Archer, Jonathan Aitken and Sheridan, all larger than life (OK, not Aitken) and all bent on self-destruction in the courts.

Should have gone the Jeremy Thorpe route )come to think of it, that didn't work out so well, even though he eventually got off the conspiracy to murder charge).

My guess is, once you have risen so high but are neither willing nor able to jettison your peccadilloes, you can't allow certain things to be left unchallenged and going to court becomes a forced move attended by enormous risk.

He might also have chosen the Max Moseley path to redemption and still been a big cheese up there, or are the Scots too prudish to elect a sexual deviant?
 
Oh boy! I have read upthread a bit. This is good stuff. What was in the emails shipped to Mumbai and lost there? What type of ship do you use to ferry e-mails across the ocean (OK forget that one - probably a job for that Italian skipper vada a bordo, Cazzo!)?
 
Can you imagine sharing a cell with Tommy at Castle Huntly? - Talk about cruel and unusual punishment...

It wasn't a matter of TS being seen as a "sexual deviant". When the original swingers club story came out, he could simply have shrugged and said "So...?". People would have applauded him, quite possibly his voting share would have increased and that would have been that.
Instead, he chose to deny it and bring in the lawyers. That meant that all manner of murky stuff was dredged up from the past and all his enemies gleefully gathered; in particular, the "avenging wimmin" of the party who pulled out their (metaphorical) fletching knives. It all eventually left him looking a good deal less like the idealistic socialist saint that he preferred to be seen as, and much more like a ragingly narcissistic, self-serving egoist.

My view is that in so completely sinking the non-Labour left in Scotland, Sheridan inadvertently made a substantial contribution to support for the SNP, who were able to position themselves as the only viable alternative to Conservative/New Labour rule from London.

Why do you think he didn't just shrug and say, 'so what'?
 
That's the mystery of the decade.
Had he just grinned and shrugged it off, apart from his missus refusing him a free drink, nobody would have given a damn- in fact it might have enhanced his image as a bit of a lad.
I think he smelled a libel suit and was hypnotised by pound signs.
