Victims identified so far in the News International hacking scandal had their mobile phone voicemail messages eavesdropped on.

However, it is possible to remotely access messages left on most landline phones as well.

Many providers, such as BT, allow customers to use a mobile phone to access their messages remotely.

This could have allowed Mulcaire to hack landlines such as Alice’s, sources say.

* -Not arrested, which is a separate police power in Scotland. Detention used to mean you could be questioned for up to 6 hours without a solicitor present, but that changed due to the Cadder case, and is now up to 12, (eta) with the right to legal representation.

Interesting - the problem I have with this is I think both of them are slimeballs so no idea which I'd rather end up in deep stuff.

In this particular case, I am happy to see Coulson back in the deep stuff.

For a start, if he is found guilty of perjury in the Sheridan case, it doesn't automatically clear Sheridan of perjury in the previous case. Even if it does result in that, Sheridan's name has been dragged through the mud, his political allies all turned on him; a win at this stage is a battle won after he has lost the war. And perhaps (only perhaps) Sheridan was innocent all along? In which case he deserves to win regardless of his big mouth, Big Brother appearance, and orange skin.

Coulson and the Murdoch Empire still need knocking down a few pegs. A conviction for Coulson is further embarrassment for Cameron, etc.

Dammit. I need to read faster. I just commented on this in the Scottish Independence thread. I wonder how such cross border "detentions" would work after independence.

I was amused to see seven polis were involved. I never knew Strathclyde polis to hunt in packs of more than four. Coulson must be a dangerous character.

Well, you can't fault the man for that.

The current arrest relates to events when AC was working for DC.

Sparks may fly.
