Obama and Jesus

I really like the way this thread has developed. We begin with criticism of Obama not being Christian enough. Then after it's pointed out how absurd the claim is, Mhaze comes in saying that the criticism is valid because Obama is too Christian.

You, sir, deserve a gold medal in mental gymnastics.
Except I didn't say that. But you have a point as to the confusions.

I have been trying to follow mhaze's logic on this topic. Anybody know a good chiropractor?

It just seems to me that Obama meets every religious test he needs to meet. He stands foursquare with God because he believes and he does what he can for his felllow man, to the best of his understanding and ability.

He stands foursquare with the constitution in that he does not use his personal belief system as a standard for legislation, nor coerce belief or semlance of belief in line with his beliefs.

What do the wing nuts expect of him?

Conversion to republicanism and acceptance of Glenn Beck as his lord and personal saviour.

Keep to the topic. The topic is not the other posters.

Sure....here's one transcript.

GG: What are you doing when you feel the most centered, the most aligned spiritually?

OBAMA: I think I already described it. It's when I'm being true to myself. And that can happen in me making a speech.....;)
I noticed in a different thread that you were disturbed by a snippet being taken out of context. (You were wrong in that instance, but I digress). Because this practice disturbs you so much, and because this (above) is one of the most egregious examples in recent memory, I invite you to review Nova Land's excellent posts that lay out your, er, mistake in painstaking detail.

I'm sure you'll want to correct the record, right?

You're welcome!

Is there a requirement in christianity that one mention Jesus in speeches, or release statements to the public about him?

I must have missed that line in the bible, do you have chapter and verse?

To a Conservative base that is steeped in enough prejudice to demand that a sitting president present an unnecessary second birth certificate to prove he is an american because his father was Kenyan and he spent much of his childhood in Indonesia...Yes!

That same background has also branded him a Muslim in their eyes which they wouldn't disbelieve unless Jesus himself verified it. It is quite funny that religious people are so quick to question the veracity of another's faith.

Perhaps you'd like to show us where any other president issued a proclamation recognizing Easter, BAC?

Here's the official list of all of them.

Feel free to take your time.

Hey BAC, did Bush 43 "release a statement or a proclamation recognizing the national observance of Easter Sunday, Christianity's most sacred holiday"? Did Bush 41? Did Clinton? Did Reagan? Carter? Ford? Nixon?

BAC... we're still waiting for you respond.

[links snipped] :popcorn1
Here, allow me translate BAC-speak into English: I found a number of examples for Bush 43 but not for any of the other presidents. Notwithstanding, I'm celebrating with a bag of popcorn.

(When the right-wing echo chamber gets all frothed up like this, it becomes more laborious to track down the historical facts because google gets polluted by the echo chamber.)

A-*******-mazing.

President Barack Obama said the following at the 2011 White House's Easter Breakfast.

-snip-
I wanted to host this breakfast for a simple reason -– because as busy as we are, as many tasks as pile up, during this season, we are reminded that there’s something about the resurrection -- something about the resurrection of our savior, Jesus Christ, that puts everything else in perspective.

We all live in the hustle and bustle of our work. And everybody in this room has weighty responsibilities, from leading churches and denominations, to helping to administer important government programs, to shaping our culture in various ways. And I admit that my plate has been full as well. (Laughter.) The inbox keeps on accumulating. (Laughter.)

But then comes Holy Week. The triumph of Palm Sunday. The humility of Jesus washing the disciples’ feet. His slow march up that hill, and the pain and the scorn and the shame of the cross.

And we’re reminded that in that moment, he took on the sins of the world -- past, present and future -- and he extended to us that unfathomable gift of grace and salvation through his death and resurrection.

In the words of the book Isaiah: “But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.”

This magnificent grace, this expansive grace, this “Amazing Grace” calls me to reflect. And it calls me to pray. It calls me to ask God for forgiveness for the times that I’ve not shown grace to others, those times that I’ve fallen short. It calls me to praise God for the gift of our son -- his Son and our Savior.
-more-

How ridiculously partisan does one have to be to find these statements insufficient compared to President Bush's statements? How absurdly un-objective does one have to be to say, "but Obama said those things a few days before Easter and not on the ACTUAL DATE!!!! Can't you people see how different that is??!!!"

Not a rhetorical question:
Look, BAC, President Obama publicly acknowledged that the Blood of Jesus Christ offers salvation to sinners and that he is a sinner who is grateful for God's Grace - how can anyone not filled with an irrational hatred of Democrats not find that sufficient?

Edited, breach of rule 10.

I think it may bother me more that he did, in fact, say something promoting Easter than when BAC was insisting he didn't. Of course, it really didn't bother me at al when BAC insisted he didn't, so that isn't saying much.

Ah, so now you're moving the goalposts from a "proclamation", to just official White House statements made about the commemoration of the Easter holiday?

Bush has more because Obama simply hasn't been in office as long.

Moving goal posts?

The very first line of the article quoted in the OP:

President Obama failed to release a statement or a proclamation recognizing the national observance of Easter Sunday, Christianity's most sacred holiday.

Moving goal posts?

The very first line of the article quoted in the OP:

Ah, so your problem is not that Obama isn't a Christian (because he is), nor that he hasn't made statements about Easter released via official White House press releases (because he has).

Your problem is that you just don't like the format in which he did such things. Bush delivered an Easter message (but didn't issue a "proclamation"), while Obama only issued Easter greetings and talked about Easter at Easter prayer breakfasts (but also didn't issue a "proclamation").

Obviously only a Christianity-hating Muslim like Obama would do the latter instead of the former. Because, for some as-yet-unexplained reason, what Bush did counts as a "statement" (but not a "proclamation"), but what Obama did doesn't.

EDIT:And why, BAC, did that article in the OP mention proclamations at all, if no other president has issued an Easter proclamation?
