The helicopter. Why would they blow it up? Isnt pakistan ment to be an ally? I'm pretty sure they would have secured the area and took out all the guards anyway. Is it a case of it got taken out but didnt want to act like anything went wrong on the mission?

also since when do you blow up a multi million $ piece of equipment because it breaks down?

Its been on the news all day. One of the helicopters suffered a mechanical fault, so the americans apparently blew it up so it wouldnt fall into enemy hands.

I don't see why that would be a problem.

Yes, of course, we share all our classified information with our allies.

Here is the thing. It is an American helicopter. There are many American troops in the surrounding area in Paki/Afghanistan. If Al Qaeda or anyone like them got hold of it they could possibly get very close to American and allied personnel and do a whole hell of a lot of damage before it was discovered it wasn't one of ours anymore. Makes more sense to destroy it, yes?

To me it would make more sense to salvage it. Bit of a waste of money.

Why risk sensitive technology falling into hands that aren't yours?

ETA: Plus, wasting money is what the military is good at :D (just kidding)

Really? You're going to salvage a helicopter during a firefight? In a semi-friendly country, in which you're not supposed to be - especially conducting military operations?

I wasn't aware SEALs and the like were cross-trained in helicopter maintenance and salvage. I'm sure they carried plenty of tools and brought a few Skycranes, just in case.

You're kidding, right?

Oh I'm sure mushy was just suggesting that they could have just locked it up, called AAA and had it fixed up at the garage.

I gotta admit that when they blew up the downed helicopter in Black Hawk Down I had to think about why for about 2 seconds. Then common sense kicked in. Duh.

Yes, well, the special forces are almost an entirely different species and they probably also had bits of equipment on the helicopter that would be dangerous in the wrong hands.

The helicopter was in the head of a terrorist organisation compound.

I think the "problem" is your assumptions that (1) they are allies and (2)that we would share that tech with our allies.

(1) is clearly not as true as it once was, assuming it was ever really true.

(2) is likely never true.

(2a) that, just because they're our ally, Pakistan won't take the opportunity to take a peek inside while their soldiers guard it until it could be picked up by U.S. forces.

It's standard operating procedure to destroy a downed helicopter or other immobilized equipment during a special forces operation.

This was a SEAL Team 6 high-risk operation. I don't think they're even capable of worrying about financial costs. Pretty much by definition, when they're sent on a mission, you can forget about financial costs.

Pakistan is not a close ally. They cooperate with the US in certain cases to continue to receive billions in aid. Osama was living near a Pakistani military academy. The Pakistani gov't suppossedly had no idea where Osama was for the last 8 or so years.

Do we really want the Pakistani military looking at out military equipment? The answer is no.
