Yes, I'm sure somebody who doesn't understand treadmills, cotton reels or balloons has a whole lot to teach us. I'm only here to laugh at humber's nonsense.

Why don't you ask windgrins to post the solution, and we can see how well it stand my scrutiny. You had better believe that it would need to be a book, once all the details are examined. Very complex little devices, transistors.

You have all backed away from betting over the TM cart that could not exist, and now you this.

Motion is relative. It is you who seems to be incapable of grasping that simple concept.

And the accelerometer says you have bought a bastardized version of what everyone else takes for granted, so that cranky idea can be passed off as something new.
I know exactly how the TM works, and how the trials were biased in favour of the forced outcome. You have been taken in by a confidence trick.

Funny: Windgrins posted the problem to test your claim that you were an expert in X-band. I know next to nothing about the topic, but it's obvious you're blowing smoke in a futile effort to avoid embarrassing yourself yet again by failing to correctly solve the problem. You're not fooling anybody humber.

ETA: The bet was not initially offered by you. You made a counter offer of a sucker bet that only a complete idiot would take, obviously so you could accuse people of backing out of the bet that you actually backed out of.

What accelerometer? How does it tell me that?

Still no mention of what "different results" would occur in the three aircraft carrier scenarios. Not even a hint.

Weird de-rail about recumbent bikes!
I wish i didn't know a lot about them, but because I do, I'm obligated to argue with most of humber's points. Its true about cost, however. mostly small time outfits; a specialty item almost. I raced bikes in college and beyond, briefly. Still ride, but lots slower.
Built proto-type mt bikes in 1970. Built 3 wheeled recumbents in 74; 2 person, side by side deltas. Crazy fun; lots of mistakes. Built rail-road bikes after that; crossed braced 3-speeds with out-riggers. They could be quickly dis-connected so both people could ride on roads like normal. Serious fun there. We worked on these rigs on tracks that were still used for trains; very 'punk' thing to do.
I have a tadpole trike now, and a suspended mt. bike. Some of the high end tadpoles fold quickly into a suit-case sized package. people take them on planes and buses.
I live and breathe bike stuff.

My main complaint regarding safety issues is one of infrastructure. Bikes and cars shouldn't have to mix. For that matter, cars and huge semis shouldn't have to mix.
Its a shame when good technology runs up against bad technology, if the bad is deeply entrenched. People are afraid to drive the cars of the future because of the 4 ton dinosaurs they must share the road with. Gross tonnage wins, but not because its better.

Back on topic, sort of:

A guy recently sailed his trike across America, on the public roads. He has some videos of the adventure. Very cool rig. I'll try to get a link. Spork and JB might dig it, though I'd guess they already know about it.

On the thread about two years ago, he said that if you jumped on the one that's moving relative to the earth (it was an enclosed train in that question IIRC), that you could tell because the on the moving object, you wouldn't land in same place you jumped from. I'm not making that up.

I have explained it all before, and am not going to repeat it to face the same silly Sporkian nonsense. Galileo does not put any stock in "can't tell", but did some thought experiments that suggested constant motion would not influence his shipboard experiments. The two are by no means the same.

If you were on that carrier, it would take but seconds "to tell" by measuring the speed of the ship against the water. No problem at all.

To say that the wind driven by the thermal energy of the sun, is the same as the ground moving the other way, is a stupefying error, and I can well understand Dr Camp's bemusement at being offered a medieval proposition.

I am telling you as a fact, and without any alteration of the measurements in any way, that the wind deviates by up to 40 degrees over the trail period. Undeniable, because that is NALSA's data. It should be more after correction. You can see from the vane in the Jenkins video, that happens.

Local to me 800Euro up.
My folding bike is a simple one. It has a hinge in the middle of the spar.
The rest may be folded, but most of the time that is not necessary. I can carry on to the train, unfolded, with one hand. It is light, agile and fun to ride, and cost 169Euro. I don't see how the supposed advantages of recumbents are actually realized.

But they do, and even in The Netherlands, you have to live with that. What you don't want is some recumbent blocking the ever-narrower cycle paths, and weaving all over the place every time it starts off. I hate the damn things.

It is better Quarky, because without those big trucks, you would find that things cost a lot more at the supermarket. They are very efficient per ton/mile. Perhaps its the cars that should go.

I have explained it all before,
Making many fundamental, laughable errors that demonstrated complete ignorance of basic physicx
and am not going to repeat it to face the same silly Sporkian nonsense.
For "Sporkian nonsence" read, real physics
Galileo does not put any stock in "can't tell",
Humber's channeling the dead now.

Humber's maintaining his ridiculous pose of being some kind expert to the bitter end, even though everyone except (possibly) himself can see that he is laughably ignorant on every topic on which he has so far posted.

Keep dancin'!

Hah. So you think that if you are in a car, you can't tell if road is moving or the car is moving? Well you can, because it's the car that has the engine.
Voodoo carriers with no engines or props to tell you anything that will break the spell of the "relative motion". And if you find out, that will change what, exactly? You won't need an engine, or will need and engine. This cart tacks the wind, and and that is a fact.

I used to do this in school English essay questions too.. if I can't answer the question, change the question and hope no one notices.

Ahhh... So the Earth is fixed in space, because it doesn't have an engine. :D

Are you talking to me? I can't remember when I last asked you a question at TR, but I did ask you a question here at JREF just a couple of days ago: http://www.internationalskeptics.com/forums/showthread.php?p=7131747#post7131747. Are you interested in continuing the conversation about the angle of the wind? I don't see anything that would be OT about it.
My earlier reply to you: http://www.internationalskeptics.com/forums/showthread.php?postid=7130172#post7130172
Menders reply to me: http://www.internationalskeptics.com/forums/showthread.php?postid=7123524#post7123524
I still have more I want to take up with you on this, but as I can’t do so without going over some tangential asides wrt how your question was phrased and the background of a similar exchange, I will post my response on TR. All my infractions here save one are for OT posts so I’m now very cautious. I never said or implied you asked the question on TR.

Woops. Just saw the warning and don't wish to take any chances so I will post my response to JB about his comment on Feynman's Sprinkler at TR. While I see it as quite relevant to the larger discussion, I can't be sure staff will view it in the same way. My apologies. Here’s the link. http://talkrational.org/showthread.php?p=1395792#post1395792
