General Israel/Palestine discussion thread

i don't support hamas.
i support the palestinian people.
all governments suck.

Well, guess what. I also support the Palestinian people, just as I support the Jewish people. It seems that rational people with reasonable attitude should support both peoples with their national aspirations and try to find a compromise, which could satisfy both. That is instead of glorifying one side and demonizing the other. This sort of attitude only supports the undertaker business on both sides.

It's true for a certain type of liberal (an almost-meaningless term by now), not all of them. For that subtype of liberal, which tends to be the noisy type, the main reason is simply because their previous god, communism, massively failed, so they have to look around for some other "revolutionary" anti-democratic, anti-capitalist, anti-human-rights god.

I'm afraid it is more complicated than that. It seems that the Western liberal thought's got caught into a false paradigm that source of all evil is the bad/western/white/European (neo)-colonialists exploit the innocent/darky/non-European /aborigines. They try to squeeze everything into this pattern, and the Israeli-Arab conflicts fits perfectly in their mind. No matter that the majority of the Israeli population is hardly "western white Europeans". Anyway, they have to label everyone as "good guys' or "bad guys", and whatever approximately fits their simplistic worldview is accepted as dogma, damned be the reason.

Well, Thunder has stated that because Church and state aren't separate like they are in the US, Israel isn't free (I know it was one of three things he said, but he must think that it must be so for it to be free given how he phrased his post). This is untrue.

In the UK the church has a direct link to our governmental system. It is directly involved in the legislature.
what direct link is that? The only thing I can think of is that the head of state is also the head of the church of England. This certainly doesn't give the church any link to the legestature that I can think of....when the queen rubber stamps legislation she does so as the head of state not the head of the church.

Your Queen is also nominally the head of state of Australia (although our governor general really is) but this does not link Australia with your legislature.

there is nothing 'clueless' about 'queers for palestine'. it's another 'c' word, compassion.
we recognize the oppression of the palestinian people and support thier political cause for freedom.
none of us are busting our butts to move to gaza, but that does not stop us from empathizing with the palestinian plight.
the children that are suffering are not to blame for the views of their parent's religion, for example.

They don't want freedom. They want to destroy Israel and drive the Jews from the region. It's not a liberal movement, it's a fascist and racist one. And people in the west who support it are useful idiots. Just like people who support Cuban communism.

no, it is my contention that since Israel does not have seperation of church & state, has codified discrimination, and does not respect the fundamental right of freedom of speech, Israel is not a "liberal" democracy.

For someone who doesn't consider Palestinians human, it's odd that there are many Palestinian members of the parliament and also of the government. How many Jews are there in Islamist governments' parliaments, again -- say, in Saudi Arabia?

Jews serve in the Iranian Parliament.

Iran used to have a token Jew in it's parliament who would make speeches about freeing Palestine from the Zionist oppressors. Google doesn't help find out if they still do.

Yes, one Jew sits in the Majlis. This is a provision stipulated in the constitution. I think two Armenians (or maybe only one) are also permitted to sit in the Majlis. However, I have heard that Muslims are not allowed to vote for minority "protected" groups so the number is a de facto maximum.

I can think of a strong connection.

Damn, it's tough finding the standard to condemn Israel over that doesn't make you look like a raging hypocrite, isn't it?

Someone better slip me a Valium because I am soooo oooooutraged at this racist, apartheid state.

Look, I'm not saying Britain has no right to exist, but I do believe boycotts, divestment and sanctions are needed to teach the country a lesson for all the war crimes they committed against Germans.

Folks - look at the title of this thread, it was chosen to provide a cryptic clue about the topic of this thread.

Also stop the childish personalised bickering.

Agreed.

What's the latest on the Jerusalem bombing? Anyone owned up to it yet?

Could anyone tell me a reliable source for Hamas, Islamic Jihad and Hezbullah statements can be found?

Whenever something like the Jerusalem bombing happens there are some people who are very quick to call it a "false flag" attack. (Yes, there are people saying that). When it is pointed out that it is far likelier to be a Palestinian group responsible than the Israeli government a common response is "What right do you have to presume such a thing!?!" (I know, the irony is rich, but they don't get irony!)

Of course, while Hamas and Islamic Jihad denied responisibility for the bombing they too presumed it was a Palestinian group saying it was a "natural response to Israeli crimes" [sic] according to the Jerusalem Post and a few message boards. Of course, such sources are not considered trustworthy by conspiracy-types. So anywhere else? Hmmm, as I type this I am thinking of something like MEMRI and I'll check that out now. Any other similar sources that posters here could recommend?

err...you only have yourself to blaim for discussing such events with wacky Conspiracy Theorists.

I made a specific request just now. Do you have any sources similar to what I asked for?

you want sources of info regarding Hamas, Hezbollah, & Al Qaeda that will not be disregarded by Conspiracy Theorists?

dude....the answer to your problem it to stop talking to them, not trying to convince them of reality.

Dude, what would you say are the most reliable sources of information on the Middle East?

sigh....26 bishops who have no political affiliation out of 720 people in the house of lords is a strong connection between the legislature and the church of england? Whats the last piece of legislation they attempted to influence?

Really? You don't know about the British government so you decide that I'm wrong?

We have bishops in our non elected house in the legislature. Let me repeat that again, we have CoE bishops in our government.
Enough of a link yet?

ETA: Apparently not.

Really? I mean seriously? We've got a state religion, we're literally and officially a Christian country, and we have Bishops in the unelected house and you don't think that we qualify as a state that has no separation of church and state? Come off it The Fool, stop living up to your name. You don't have to defend Parky just because he agrees with you on Israel. He said something stupid, so we pointed it out.

Only going back to the 1940's eh?

If you went back further we'd really be screwed.
