It is bizarre, how the intellectuals in the west have decied to throw their suppport behind fundamentalist religious nutjobs who don't value freedom of speech, assembly, press, religion... none of the things western intellectuals supposedly stand for. And have nothing but vitriolic hatred for the only liberal democracy in the entire middle east.

And then you get the completely clueless, like these guys: http://www.quitpalestine.org/

Throwing their support behind those who would literally kill them if they had the chance, the disconnect is mind-boggling..

there is nothing 'clueless' about 'queers for palestine'. it's another 'c' word, compassion.
we recognize the oppression of the palestinian people and support thier political cause for freedom.
none of us are busting our butts to move to gaza, but that does not stop us from empathizing with the palestinian plight.
the children that are suffering are not to blame for the views of their parent's religion, for example.

Do you think there's anything at all Palestinian leaders could do to bring this about?

I must admit I'm surprised to discover that the anti-Israeli position is not predominant on this forum. I've started getting used to the fact that all the freethinker/liberal/godless/etc camp, which I've always considered a home, has been gradually swallowed by the anti-Israeli/anti-Zionist swamp. For me, an Israeli skeptic, it is really painful to see. The sense of betrayal is overwhelming.

It's true for a certain type of liberal (an almost-meaningless term by now), not all of them. For that subtype of liberal, which tends to be the noisy type, the main reason is simply because their previous god, communism, massively failed, so they have to look around for some other "revolutionary" anti-democratic, anti-capitalist, anti-human-rights god.

Many Jewish liberals in the USA and Europe feel betrayed by Israel.

Strangely, they never seem to feel betrayed by the likes of Arafat, or by Hamas. No matter how dishonest they were, no matter how clearly they indicate their goal is the eradication of Israel, no matter how they treat their minorities (homosexuals, Christians, etc.), no matter even if they deny the holocaust, which would put anybody else beyond the pale... the Palestinians would still be their darlings.

what in hell does the holocaust have to do with israeli/palestinian issues??
that 'card' is in the wrong game...

gee...sounds a lot like the israeli government. oh right....they don't really consider 'palestinians' as human...

For someone who doesn't consider Palestinians human, it's odd that there are many Palestinian members of the parliament and also of the government. How many Jews are there in Islamist governments' parliaments, again -- say, in Saudi Arabia?

It has to do with it because of Hamas' denial of the holocaust, and Hamas is certainly relevant to the Israel / Palestine issue. I think it's somewhat morally relevant to know that the "opressed revolutionaries" you support are openly holocaust deniers, don't you think?

Usually, liberals cannot think of anything lower than a holocaust denier (and for a good reason, too). But when the Palestinians do it, a certain type of liberal suddenly ignores it, or, even, justifies or minimizes it. We see both types of reaction in this thread.

Iran used to have a token Jew in it's parliament who would make speeches about freeing Palestine from the Zionist oppressors. Google doesn't help find out if they still do.

Israel's Arab MKs are very far from token Arabs (not that I think you were implying that). They seem to be giving the same speeches...
