Apparently a republican wants to do in Missouri.

SB 222 – This act modifies the child labor laws. It eliminates the prohibition on employment of children under age fourteen. Restrictions on the number of hours and restrictions on when a child may work during the day are also removed. It also repeals the requirement that a child ages fourteen or fifteen obtain a work certificate or work permit in order to be employed. Children under sixteen will also be allowed to work in any capacity in a motel, resort or hotel where sleeping accommodations are furnished. It also removes the authority of the director of the Division of Labor Standards to inspect employers who employ children and to require them to keep certain records for children they employ. It also repeals the presumption that the presence of a child in a workplace is evidence of employment.

I think this is a great idea. Kids these days are too spoiled. A bit of hard labor would do them some good. Builds character and all that. Besides, you don't need to pay them as much. Employers could replace expensive older workers with children to reduce labor costs.

The great advantage of children is that they are also very small and can wriggle into small spaces in machines to unclog them of things that jammed them up such as the remains of the kids that went in there to unclog the machine the first time.

Excellent point! This is such a great idea I wonder why it took so long for someone to think of it.

I presume there's a reason besides fulfilling political narratives of pure evil.

Another advantage is that if a child cannot be educated they can leave school at age 12 and get to work. That way society does not have to waste money baby-sitting these children until they are 15.

I somehow doubt that this law will pass.

I thought we did this bill under some thread title like "Crazy laws" about two weeks ago.

Everything I need to know I learned in kindergarten.

In reality this law is nothing like the summary. A lot of it is mainly for minors in the entertainment industry. If little kids weren't allowed to work in television there would have never been Barney. Wait a minute?!?

I, for one, would like to go on record supporting full, Dickensian 22-hour workdays for children as young as 0. It's clear from most other posts this is the intent of the law.

It would have to be a republicker doing that. Guess his puppetmasters feel they are paying too much for adults to work their sweatshops so.......

But what will stop Mexican children from taking our children's jobs? It will be much easier for them to sneak into the United States since they'll be harder to spot and they can crawl under the fences.

I was curious about the reasoning for this. I found this OpEd

http://voices.kansascity.com/entries/missouri-senator-wants-repeal-child-labor-laws/

It sounds like the proposal was an attempt to allow 14-15 year olds to work without a permit. It also sounds like it was really poorly thought legislation. I just find it hard to imagine that even the most rabid free market advocate wants to allow unfettered restrictions for children to work (and be abused). There is also this:

http://www.news-leader.com/article/...ng-child-labor-laws-Missouri-has-benefits-GOP

I'm having a little trouble finding a news report. Most I'm seeing are opinion pieces.

I haven't read every line of the text of the bill*, but it apparently has restrictions on the types of work a child can do and it clearly says that no child will be allowed to take a job that prevents him/her from attending school. It also clearly requires parental approval and gives parents(or guardians) the rights to access to the work place including dressing room areas.

I think there's something missing here in why this is a story.

*Because my browser is giving me a lovely cranberry colored background and it's damned hard to read. I'd go blind if I went through every line of it.

Yes you are right the summary was misleading. Here is what I found I said in an older thread.

I am not saying I am in favor of the bill but the summary looks misleading to me. The under fourteen applies to the entertainment industry.

Do you watch television, movies or plays with children?

Here is the hotel portion
Not allowed to work in:
Any capacity in or about a motel, resort, hotel, where sleeping
accommodations are furnished except in offices or locations physically separated
from the sleeping accommodations;

The summary says
"Restrictions on the number of hours and restrictions on when a child may work during the day are also removed. "

THe bill says,

1. A child shall not be employed, permitted or
2 suffered to work at any gainful employment for more than three
3 hours per day in any school day, more than eight hours in any
4 nonschool day, more than six days or forty hours in any
5 week. Normal work hours shall not begin before seven o'clock in
6 the morning nor extend to after 9:00 p.m., except as provided in
7 subsection 2 of this section.

There are special exceptions in this for late shows. I wonder if this is to allow children to perform in Branson

The hotel portion does not say "Children under sixteen will also be allowed to work in any capacity in a motel, resort or hotel where sleeping accommodations are furnished."
and the restictions on hours are not removed. I don't know what they were before but these rules do not appear to be aimed at hurting children.

Uhm... I may be missing something, but exactly why can't they work in places with beds?
