The copy cat joke that you commented on was stupid and boring. And if someone told a person that telling a bad and badly timed joke was in poor taste when there were possibly thousands dead, and to shut the up, the normal human response would be to apologize, not to act like a worse jerk about it.

You were within your rights to point out the insensitivity. Some people wear their lack of empathy like a badge of honor. People recognize that kind of behavior, more often than not, hides low self esteem.

2149: The Kyodo news agency is now citing a safety panel as saying that the radiation level inside one of the reactors at the Fukushima-Daiichi nuclear plant is 1,000 times higher than normal.

Earlier I looked up this place (the nuclear power station) on google maps and, whaddya know, it's built hanging off the coast of a small country which is subject to 10%* of the planet's earthquakes, facing in the direction of the source of those earthquakes, and on probably the planet's most densely populated stretch of coastline.

CNN reporter talking about boats in Crescent City CA "tossed around as if they were weightless". But strictly speaking, isn't a boat floating in water actually weightless?

With all that warning I'm surprised so many boats were still in the harbor.

There was only 15 minutes between the quake and the first wave hitting the coast. There are going to be thousands dead. People here are starting to ask the news media to help them locate their family members who they've been unable to reach.

How sad that all those Japanese students were also among those killed in New Zealand.

The harbor thingy is only that a a lot boats were trashed, not a big deal relative the the rest of the news.

I thought only 2 trains were missing. I keep checking for an update but haven't found one yet. Still, there will be thousands dead, I don't think that is an underestimate.

Looks like they are all OK. No serious damage to any of the bases.

What I find remarkable is the amount of fires there are when an earthquake of this size hits Japan. Just like then one in Kobe (as I remember it) there are fires everywhere. Even in the tsunami itself.
In contrast I can't remember seeing a fire on the news from the New Zealand earthquake.

Of course my memory can be faulty.

Japan seems to be particularly vulnerable to fires after earthquakes. I seem to recall that most of the 5,000 or so people who died in the Kobe quake were actually killed by massive firestorms that developed after the shake.

Christchurch did have a couple of fires caused directly by the quake, including the one in the CTV building which has probably incinerated some of the victims meaning no body will be recovered. There was also a big spike in house fires out in the suburbs as power came back on.

I think part of it might be default emergency response. In Christchurch when the quake happened they basically just completely shut off power and gas to the entire city, and only brought it back on in areas it was known weren't badly damaged.

And finally, Christchurch in particular is quite an old city in that a very high percentage of the current buildings are original structures, not modern ones. Because of the extreme climate and lack of local wood, most of the buildings are made of brick and stone rather than wood.
