No Fly zones over Libya?

Yeah. Obama is probably thinking about having the murder-death planes fly shotgun in the sky. And then turn into butterflies across their nation, thereby fulfilling the ancient hippie prophesy.

It's not like Kadaffy could actually do anything about it.

Problem is outside interference might backfire;a lot of Libyans who would be happy to see Gahdaffi gone might well resent outside inteference in their affairs.

This is true and a real risk. But if a no-fly zone meant preventing Ghaddafi's planes killing the civilian population and even shooting a few of his planes down I'd be quite happy.

And would those who advocate this advocate the same if the Iranian Government used similiar measures against a popular movement?

I can only live in hope. I'd like to see that rotten theocratic government pulled down yesterday.

Sort of meaningless until he says want kind of response he means.

I don't think Military intervention is high on the list of possible responses, though.
I don't think he wants the US Marines to return to the shore of Tripoli anytime soon....

It depends. If there are US citizens needing to get out then it becomes a US concern. Maybe the Marines can just come in to escort the US citizens out and leave a strategically placed lamp-post behind for any civic-minded citizens to utilize as they see fit.

Hmm it's starting to look possible that Gaddafi could survive. No one close enough to do so appears prepared to knife him in the back so it comes down to larger scale force. Gaddafi appears to have stablised Tripoli so it will not be easy.

The oppisition have light weapons and bravery but little training. The defecting bits of the army are a little better but not much. Libyan Islamic Fighting Group may have some experence but I can't see them being setup to fight pictched battles.

Gaddafi has the 32nd Brigade who are likey the only geniunily effective fighting force in the country. He apparently has his mercenaries of unknown quality (might be the old Pan-African Legion though).

A conflict between to too looks like something that could go either way.

IF this becomes a full scale civil war, and Ghadaffi tries to retake the Eastern half of Libya, I wonder if names like Bengazi, Gazala,Tobruk, Beda Fomm, and Halfaya Pass will show up in the news...again.

Tobruk already has. Of course this may result in a situation where gamers of a certian age wounder why libya names it's cities after BF1942 maps.

Obama is talking to European leaders about possible actions against Libya, including even a no-fly zone to protect the protestors from aircraft strikes.

Yep, including the French and the Italians. Has Obama been reading dudalb's posts on JREF again or was this already on the cards when dudalb posted his comment?

I'd support patrols of Libyan airspace if it stops Gaddafi killing "his" people.

Let's hope the Italians don't change sides at half-time ;)

So what happens when Khadaffi manages to shoot down some planes and capture the crews? What do the French and Italians do then?

Change sides and surrender.

Then we'll have to go liberate them again.

The last time Khaddafi's "Air Force" attacked out-country, the Minister of the Air Force on his next inspection of the inventory had to don scuba gear to find his airplanes.

Well it's old italian imperial turf so following normal european protocols I guess Italy would invade.

Well that or kill Gaddafi in the next airstrike.

Maybe the Rebels can find some old, abandoned German 88's to use. They would still be one hell of a good weapon for infantry support........

If a UN peacekeeping force is sent in, the Aussie contingent gets Tobruk.
