PEAK OIL: Going Mainstream

Why not go to coal for the time being? Couldn't you take coal, bind it to some chemical that was no more toxic than gasoline and burned decently well?

Either that or you could use thermal depolymerization technology (though I wonder how long it would be before conspiracy theorists claim that this technology will be used in lieu of cremators in the FEMA death camps -- this is meant to sound absurdly ridiculous for the record since people often think I'm actually serious when I say everything online)

You're probably right. In fact, if we all woke up tomorrow morning to find gasoline at 12 bucks a gallon, I wouldn't be surprised if there wasn't a moped on the shelf anywhere in California by lunchtime. Sales might be a little slower in places like Missouri or Illinois.

How would it be fatal? Their costs would rise, and they would either have to increase prices or cut costs elsewhere.

Because if they increased prices, they'd lose sales -- they'll lose sales anyway, because people will have less disposable income left over after they pay for their fuel-related expenses. And costs can only be cut so far; if you're selling dollar bills for fifty cents, you can't make it up on volume.

Most of the costs that can be cut have been -- that's one of the recession legacies.

People would save money by using mass transit. That's one of the benefits of higher oil/gas prices! Less cars on the road would be another benefit.
