Merged Rep. Giffords Shot In Tucson

 So if you don't intend people to literally act on it, what? Should there be a law against it? Who decides what may be taken the wrong way.

Go play in traffic.

So you be a responsible person and don't say it.

If you want a civil war, and MEAN it, say so, but until that day, a decent human being just does not use that rhetoric.

It appears that the Arizona Star has it wrong on his party affiliation. According to PZ Myers who links to a snapshot from the AZ Secretary of State's website, Loughner is not registered as "Independent". He is a Republican. A sad tragedy for all, regardless of affiliation and a chance to learn and work towards reducing the vitriol. The first step is to reduce the mis- and dis-information, particularly the intentional kind.

Whump!

Sorry if it's been brought up earlier in the thread but does anyone else think this guy was living a "taxi driver" fantasy?

Whump!

A radio host I know confirmed that with a phone call early today.

Slightly unrelated, but is this some kind of performance art? Andy Kauffman-style comedy?

I just have trouble believing that anyone takes this guy seriously.

On Beck's web site theblaze.com, he says:

"This tragedy should not be used as an opportunity to try and bend reality to retroactively place a madman on the other side of the aisle. "

And what is the headline story on that site now?

Michelle Malkin Details ‘Climate of Hate’ on the Left

And a story on the same page:

Dems’ Enemy Amnesia: Obama or Palin – Who’s Really Responsible for Ramping Up the Rhetoric?

Mr Beck is truly breath-taking.

I think he worried her.
Apparently he worried just about anyone who came in contact with him. I haven't heard anyone say "he was a nice guy who kept to himself", as you often hear in these things. Instead it's "he creeped me out", "he worried me", etc etc.

Are you sure you're not contributing to the mis- and dis-information?

According to Washington Post's Chris Cillizza:

"Suspected Tucson gunman Jared Lee Loughner registered as an independent voter in Arizona in the fall of 2006, according to the Pima County Registrar of Voters.

Loughner registered to vote on Sept. 29, 2006, identifying himself as an independent. Records show he voted in the 2006 and 2008 elections but is current listed as "inactive" on the state's voter roles -- meaning that he did not vote in November."

btw, if you want to see how easy it may be to doctor up a website pic...here's the same one someone posted to show Loughner was a Democrat

also, the "original" photo that showed Laughner as a Republican had misspellings, now there's a new one being circulated by the Left

I'll go with the Washington Post on this one for now...until I see other evidence.

Evidence or the post # that has the citation please.
I thought everyone knew this. She only had 2 subscriptions on her youtube page - to Rep. Ike Skelton, and to Loughner's channel.

It looks like Loughner is no longer on her subscription list, but it was there as late as last night at least.

I agree with the sentiment in principle, there's no reason for anyone to bring up domestic violence and both sides have done so.

As a matter of fact, however, RIGHT NOW, the credible danger is mostly coming from one side.

The Secret Service says death threats against Congresspeople are up 200% and up 400% against the president since the Bush era. The FBI released their report on growing extremism on the right to similar skepticism only to have event after even confirm their fears.

That doesn't mean everyone on the left is pure and it doesn't mean everyone on the right is bloodthirsty, but as a matter of fact the dangerous stuff is predominantly coming from rabid anti-government types.

I agree. While there is obviously violent rhetoric and actions on both sides, and partisans on both sides do tend to believe their side is immune, or at best the other side does it a lot more, that does not mean that both sides are currently doing it more or less equally. The Golden Mean fallacy anyone?

That said, I don't think it's an important factor in this case. So far it doesn't seem to be a crazy ass driven over the edge by partisan politics, but a mentally disturbed paranoid taking any and all comers from CT sources and acting on whatever local politician happened to annoy him first.

I think I understand The Left's stance on this now...

"We, The Left, get to make unfounded and unproven links between Right-wing rhetoric and this shooting tragedy, however, if The Right so much as denies it or even tries to show that we use THE SAME EXACT type of vitriolic hateful rhetoric ourselves...we will attack them mercilessly for doing so!

It's perfectly ok to show the Palin "crosshair" map as if to draw a link to this event...but it is out of bounds to show that we on The Left have used similar "bullseye" and "target" maps and videos ourselves!"

right??

Yeah, this is the exact opposite of what you usually hear.

No.

Mr Beck does not have headline stories about the Palin crosshair, in any kind of negative light. He has a headline story about "The Climate of Hate on the Left". IF he had both, IF he was fair and balanced and wanted to show both sides, either he would omit rhetoric about both sides, or present them equally.

But he does not.

I'm no fan of Beck, don't watch his FOX News show, don't listen to his radio show, don't visit his website.

I can't comment on his hypocrisy...I can only comment on the hypocrisy I see here.

I see. I was commenting specifically to a post about Beck.

I see also that he does have a story there, entitled:
"Lib Talker Bill Press Flat Out Accuses Beck & Palin’s Rhetoric of Being Responsible For Violence"

But when I watch the video, Bill Press says (near the end)...
We don't have all the evidence (but referring to the map and crosshairs)
Thats enough evidence to AT LEAST raise the issue that the rhetoric was over the top

That doesn't quite seem like a "Flat out accusation" to me. Even when Beck tries to make it look like he presents both sides of an issue, it is humorously slanted, and even the title is spun.
