Wikileaks. Any comments?

What's funny is that I don't really want more transparency. Why? Because I want my country to be nasty and effective. I want it spying on anyone and everyone so that they have the dirt and can strong arm others into doing what we want. Information is powerful in this context.

OMG! It's almost like Assange knew that!

Of course. It is the guy with the "insurance policy" he's been threatening to release should he appear before any court.

5 December 2010

A long list of key facilities around the world that the US describes as vital to its national security has been released by Wikileaks.

The US State Department in February 2009 asked all US missions abroad to list all installations whose loss could critically affect US national security.

Do any of you wikileaks fan really think the above is a good thing? That it makes the world safer? Because if you do, you are fools.

Assange should now be in prison … or viewed as an enemy of the state and treated accordingly.

That Obama hasn't acted to make that happen is telling.

To think that Wikki Leaks is a good thing is to think that the destruction of the United States and eventually Western Civilization is a good thing. Why do you think that the destruction of the United States and eventually Western Civilization is a good thing?

Sorry, is this the humor section? Wikileaks is the end of civilisation?

Bwhaaaaa.

The impotent rage of US partisans, their calls for Assange's death and so on are hilarious, wonderful and all the proof I need that we could do with several more Assange's.

Relax, guys, You're still the world's only superpower, you're still at zero risk of losing that position in the foreseeable future, you just need to sack up and take responsibility for some of the things you've been doing that you really wish we hadn't found out about.

In future, you should just do fewer things that will make you look like ******** if we find out about them, because in the age of the internet, there's an increasing chance we will.

hyperbole, much ?

The only thing I have agaisnt wikileak is that they are mostly leaking about the USG. I am waiting eagerly leaks about *MY* own government. That will force them to be more transparent , *OR*, to be much more secretive, and thus be less effective at being crook.

Wikileaks leaks whatever they are given - lately they have been given a lot of stuff from US government files, which is more newsworthy and gets more attention from the JREF forum partisans who follow the US government line even to the point of calling for the murder of journalists who leak things the US government is very rightfully embarrassed about.

However they'll leak against any government or organisation that is up to no good, if they are leaked the information to do so. Blaming them because your locals aren't leaking seems a bit odd.

We are not responsible for what you wrote, WildCat. You are. So don't go trying to weasel out of it. You made a mistake whether it was about how you posted something or whether you tried to deny Extraordinary Rendition existed (maybe you forgot about it, how do we know?)

And I don't care if you are now clarifying your story or changing it. Bottom line is don't blame other people. Take a little responsibility for your mistake.
I'm responsibgle for what I wrote, and I know what I was writing about. As should anyone with any kind of reading comprehension skills who followed the entire conversation.

But since you're desperately clutching at that straw claiming I don't think extraordinary rendition is real, here's a quote from over 3 years ago:
To state the obvious, extraordinary rendition is real and the 9/11 conspiracy the troofers champion is a load of [rule 8].
Still want to claim I have doubts SG?

So you do think that releasing documents that detail the targets around the world that are critical to US National Security is a good thing. I see. You do realize that many of those targets are not US installations, but things like mines, a insulin plants, gas pipelines and manufacturing facilities ... places where ordinary citizens of foreign countries work and which those countries depend on for critical items. You think THAT is a good thing?

Now I don't know what country you live in, but do you really think that a weaker America will make your country safer ... your life better? If you do, perhaps you should look again at history. Make it a rational look for once.

It has been outlaid somewhere else why security by obscurity is not a good thing. A weakness you hide is still a weakness.

Yes I have looked at history. And history is, state rise and fall. I did not look it in detail, but I think to remember that while strong state among weaker one bring stability for themselves they do not for the weaker one. And indeed I think a weaker America (but still strong on its own) would make us a load safer, as a weaker America would not invade nilly willy other country, for example, or would be more cautious in its dealings, more circumspect.

So, I take it, you are in favor of YOUR government publishing a list of all vulnerabilities to it's national security?

I suppose that includes the vulnerability calculations for all military installations as well?

Tell me, does your nation have any regional enemies? :D

The US hasn't invaded anything "nilly willy". You start from a false premise.

On the other hand, the other side in this battle that's been going on the last 60 years ... ;)

Yeah. Right. I forgot some people still think Irak invasion was justified, or that the Afghanistan revenge trip was justified. *shrug* think whatever you want.

As for revealing secret, the "enemy" of my nation already know them almost certainly.

He's just asking for it, isn't he? Now his life is probably more at risk from people who would like to see whatever those files contain than those who don't. I.e., more at risk from a crazy on the left … and there are plenty of those. Won't it be ironic if those governments he is now threatening have to put him into protective custody? :D

He circulated insurance.aes256 like...a year ago. Are you really this uninformed on the topic you're soapboxing about for nearly 100 pages?

Assange is allegedly somewhere in London. It's exciting, like a Bourne film or searching for an urbane Bin Laden!

Except Assange didn't orchestrate the synchronized hijacking of multiple airliners which then rammed themselves into the hub of world commerce. But other than that, yeah, he's just like Bin Laden.

I'm not sure if you're being serious or sarcastic. You're saying that you DON'T want your country to be run like Tony Soprano's organization? Or that you DO?

I wasn't being serious. I don't mind the bloke.

My fault. Escalation of rhetoric and acceptance of hyperbole by the general public in the discussion of this topic has been a particular personal irritation of mine, and I kinda leapt on it when I saw it. Poe's law and all that.
