North Korea fires artillery on the South

Only the perfect grace of Leader would forgive me for such an oversight. He is truly great indeed.

Yes, there's that, but NK doesn't need nukes. They have a perfectly capable standing army.

The only thing their army is perfectly capable of doing is killing a whole lot of South Korean citizens before they are obliterated by armies that have actually advanced in the last 50 years.

And therein lies the rub.

No, YOU go study.

See? It isn't a real argument no matter who says it.

What is your opinion of KJI anyway?

Believe it or not, I've met a few people (outside of SK) who think that is KJI is just misunderstood, and that this whole situation is the fault of the US and her allies. I think it's motivated simply by anti-Americanism or antiestabilishmentism.

Excellent you should now see a significant improvement in your internet speeds, golf handicap and that arthritis in your right hand should be gone by tomorrow

Where did I say pre-emptive first-strike?

Clue; I didn't.

I am talking about reacting to an attack in such a way as to end the war in hours, not years.

You don't get it.

In today's world, ending a war at all, let alone in a few hours, would be widely viewed as a war crime of horrific proportions. That's why we have all these ongoing multi-decade low-level conflicts.

We must allow NK to start "Korean Conflict, Phase II". Then we must allow that conflict to drag on for another half century. Presumably, at some point, another flimsy cease-fire agreement will be flaccidly signed. Then it's back to Square One.

Those are the rules. Learn to live with them. I have.

Which I already said, repeatedly.

The basic goal of a North Korean southern offensive is destruction of allied defenses either before South Korea can fully mobilize its national power or before significant reinforcement from the United States can arrive and be deployed. Final war preparations most likely would not involve a noticeable surge in military-related activity because almost two-thirds of the ground forces and a significant amount of logistical support already are concentrated in the forward area between P'yongyang and the DMZ.

yikes

if this is true, then sending US reinforcements to the area might precipitate a full scale war.

As has been pointed out, nK probly can't win a full out war but their missiles and artillery could definitely cause a tragedy.

Anyways, does everyone here agree that SK is completely blameless in carrying out those military exercises on the disputed island? Or does someone think that this smacks of brinksmanship?

Sort of. China likes having N.K. as a thorn in our side. I had an interesting thought this morning. Obama calls Beijing and makes them an offer they can't refuse, Taiwan for North Korea.

That's making it more complicated than it needs to be. Obama calls up Beijing and points out that nobody in the world will invest in China's industrialization if they actively support NK aggression against SK. The US certainly won't. That's a lot of money to piss away, and they do need it.

They've been pushing each others buttons like this for decades. The South Korean military knew exactly what they were doing having the training exercises where they did.

inclined to agree.

A spokesman for the South's joint chief of staff said "scores of rounds" were fired by the North. South Korean military retaliated by firing some 80 artillery rounds, Yonhap said.

Tuesday's exchange of fire came amid South Korea's drills.

"Our army was carrying out military training, and there was a telegram from North Korea with a protest and questioning whether this was an attack," Yonhap quoted the spokesman as saying.

He did not rule out that the North's shelling was a response to the drills

jeez. . .

IIRC, the George Washington carrier group is forward-deployed in Japan. If an actual invasion took place, the US can respond in at least some capacity (air support) within minutes; and I reckon it would take the group a few hours to get within missile range.

So firing a missle over Japan is KJI's way of snuggling?

North Korea, however, claimed the South had fired the first volley into the North’s airspace.

It warned that there would be more artillery rockets in store for the South if it dared to retaliate.

“Should the South Korean puppet group dare intrude into the territorial waters (of the North) even 0.001 mm, the revolutionary forces will unhesitatingly continue taking merciless counter measures,” North Korea’s official Korean Central News Agency reported. (source)

NOT EVEN 0.001mm!!!

North Korea is just adorable sometimes. It's like a brave, fiesty little kitten - I just want to take it home for a pet.

But as difficult as it is to take DPRK seriously, then they go and shoot real rounds that kill and injure real people and their delusional self-aggrandizement stops being cute and just gets frustrating.

Clearly totally unwarranted brinksmanship. Far better to surrender the disputed island than to provocatively practice to defend it. After all, countries defending their territory has historically been a major irritant in international relations, often leading to war.

Yes. If the grand saga of Communist revolution and world domination in the 20th century accomplished nothing else, it did at least leave us the legacy of that brave, fiesty little kitten.

I would like to think the US has a plan to turn the entire hundreds-mile line of artillery pointed at Seoul to a parking lot in short order. Hopefully without nukes.

How has free nations surrendering disputed territory worked to placate the dictatorial aggressor in the past?

Here's room for your 500 word essay:

Place the paper on my desk when you are done. You have 1 hour.
