Continuation - Discussion of the Amanda Knox case

You have to remember that in 2007 far fewer people were on Facebook (or myspace), and that it was less common to upload photos in such great volume then as it is today.

And anyhow, regardless of the existence (or otherwise) of photographs of Amanda and Meredith with their arms around each other or whatever, there are verifiable text messages from within 24 hours of Meredith's death. These were friendly messages from Knox asking if Meredith wanted to meet up (sent on Halloween night and the afternoon of the 1st), and friendly replies from Meredith. They certainly don;t suggest that Knox was developing a mounting jealousy or hatred towards Meredith - in fact, quite the reverse.

Knox hating Meredith is necessary for the prosecutions conspiracy theory, but there is simply no evidence of such hatred.

There is a photo showing Knox, Laura and Filomena that has been claimed as proof that Knox must have hated Meredith enough to refused to pose for a photo with her. The problem with that idea is the photo was taken before Meredith moved into the cottage.

As in several other cases of false conviction, the lack of any reasonable motive for Amanda and Raffaele should be a red flag.

According to what you read these days anything posted to social networking sites is in cyberspace forever, so protect your privacy by being careful about what you post. It's been said it's possible to recover almost anything posted online but I don't know any more than what I've read and constantly tell my teenage daughter :)

I'm skeptical photos ever existed or someone, somewhere would have talked about seeing them posted by now. All that's ever said is speculation they were on the laptops and the idiot postals deleted them (perhaps even on purpose as part of the conspiracy)

Well technically the Computer isn't really evidence is it? Since it wasn't used by the prosecution in the trial. So shouldn't it be released back to the defense team.

Very nice, I see you have already made this point. Looking at Dan O's adjustment in comparion to Rudy's print, I just do not see how it was possible that Rinaldi ruled out this print from having belonged to Rudy.

Rinaldi used the grid of LM Robbins, and he may have borrowed her working philosophy as well: tell the client what he has paid good money to hear.

It sounds like the eight are now down to five. Will try to get some clarification.

Re-reading are there perhaps only five who have filed suit against Amanda's mother and father and eight who have filed suit against Amanda? They are two separate suits so I guess the police could be different in each suit.

I understood it as 5 people where charging the parents.

It is fact, not speculation, that the police destroyed Amanda's hard drive to the point where two data recovery firms could not recover its contents.

There was one or more from the 1st, I think.

I have read, but cannot remember where, that the texts took place on Halloween between Amanda and Meredith. I think Meredith did reply to the texts. I don't think there were any texts between the two on November 1 but I am not sure.

I don't know if the texts are in the official record or what is floating around forums.

I agree. There is no speculation concerning whose responsible for the damage done to Knox's computer. It was done by the police lab. The only thing that is speculated about is why/how it was damaged.

IIRC, Meredith received a text from Knox while at her English friends' house on the late afternoon of the 1st, asking if she wanted to meet up. Meredith's friends said (again, IIRC) that she expressed regret to her them that she was going to have to decline Knox's offer.

Something else I noticed in that photo is the streaking down the entire length just left of center. At first I thought this was a defect in the manufacture of the bathmat. But when processing the photo I noticed that the streaking continued onto the tile floor. This streaking was caused by a defect in the printing, faxing or scanning of the photo through a linear feed. That means we cannot rely on the dimensional stability of the photo for measurements off the axis of the ruler. If this image is part of a larger shot that shows the full square marker we could verify and correct the above distortion if there is any.

The photo is from a pdf and I have enlarged it beyond its native resolution. All the photos in that document are very poor. It looks to me like the color depth was reduced to 8 bits, so there are artifacts from dithering.

I thought that had to do with Halloween night and Meredith declined because she already had plans.

Thanks Christiana, can't believe that did not occur to myself. You took the high road and still got to Scotland afore me.

You're right. But since this is all about a bad theory that Amanda despised Meredith (for various bogus reasons), then the friendly inviting texts sent by Amanda to Meredith are far more relevant than anything coming back the other way.

Can you please quote these "friendly and inviting" texts, I've never seen their content myself.

but you just said there were friendly replies from Meredith?
I scratched my head too

I did not know that, up until today. Thanks for the info.
I didn't know it either. Where is the cite LondonJohn?

No, I agree, it is not speculation. The police somehow destroyed the hard drives. I speculated on the existence of these photos everyone talks about, not the fact that the computers were destroyed.

I have a feeling that she sent texts on both days. But I might be wrong. I'll try and check...

I found mention in two places.

What are you doing tonight? Want to meet up later?
Got a costume?

Meredith received a couple of text messages on Halloween night from Amanda Knox, her twenty-year-old American roommate, a third-year honor student from the University of Washington in Seattle.

Motivations page 34 (She=Robyn):

She remembered that the evening of October 31 Amanda had asked Meredith to go out together.

Massei does not specify how Meredith was asked by Amanda.

ETA: This is from PMF. I do not know the source, however, it seems to agree with the excerpt from Murder In Italy.

Wednesday 31st October, 2007 (Halloween)

Evening "Amanda...sent [Meredith] numerous SMS messages."

1900 Meredith responds to her flatmate: "I have to go to a friend’s house for dinner.” The student from Seattle persisted, “What are you doing tonight? Do you want to meet up? Have you got a costume?” She then said that she was going to Le Chic and “maybe we’ll see each other.”

I don't know about November 1 (perhaps it was early in the morning, 1 or 2 a.m.).

release of the hard drive for possible repair

Why are you so sure there were any photographs? SNIP
If there were no pictures of Amanda and Meredith on their respective social networking pages my very strong suspicion would be that's because they don't actually exist. If they do, show the proof.

Danceme,

"That is unfortunate for Amanda, because her defense team wants access to the evidence on her computer. The prosecution is trying to argue that Amanda did not get along with Meredith Kercher, but photographs and videos on Amanda's hard drive would show otherwise.

At this point, it looks as if those photos will never been seen. The only remaining option is to send the drive to Toshiba, the manufacturer. This would cost many thousands of dollars, but Amanda's family is willing to shoulder the cost. Unfortunately, the Italian court has denied their request to do this."

Now that you know as much as I do. I have a question. Do you support releasing the drive to Toshiba?

Chris C: "The only thing that is speculated about is why/how it was damaged."

Wasn't there a detailed report on this? If so, then I would suggest that the only speculation is what was on it.

As far as I know, the defence has made no noises regarding files on the computer that would prove her innocence.
