How far have we come with homosexuality?

Thank you, yes, you've made it clear how you feel, and please rest assured that those of us who are not foul bigots are disgusted by it.

Now, unless you actually have something insightful and interesting on this topic - and I find that to be as likely as the possibility you have a pet Sasquatch - kindly crawl back under your rock.

And you probably do not see the irony in your own post. I recognize homosexuality for the perversion that it is, and will not be shamed or intimidated out of saying so. For this, you consider me a bigot. And yet, while you sanctimoniously deny that you are a bigot, your contempt for me, because of my beliefs with which you disagree, reveals you to be a far greater bigot than I could possibly be. Not only are you a bigot, but a hypocrite as well.

If recognize a disgusting perversion for what it is makes me a bigot, then so be it. Unlike you, I can at least be honest about this.

Yes, yes. I'm sure you're very proud of yourself.

Not only that, but do you really think gays supporting civil rights for blacks would have helped their movement? I think it would have been a case of guilt by association, considering how reviled homosexuals were at that time.
Exactly. Gawd, the fight for civil rights was tough enough without throwing in the additional complication of raging homophobia.

 What in the world do fart jokes have to do with homosexuality? Or maybe my humor machine is broken.

Just the low brow silliness that comes with peculiar bodily functions and the parts we have between our legs, and the various things we do with and to those parts. To non homosexuals, the act of sexual gratification among homosexuals and their methods will always cause a giggle, no matter how accepted it is.

It's odd that we've come to turn this particular form of sexual perversion into a protected civil right, to the point that nobody else can correctly and accurately describe it for what it truly is, and compare it to other sexual perversions, without being condemned as some sort of foul bigot for doing so.

sexuality is only a perversion when it involves people that we agree that cannot decide them self yet.
Like a 12 year old boy that is sexually abused by a grown up man.

When two grownups decide to have sex with each other, what problem does that create for you? When they decide to marry each other, what problem does that create for you? It is none of your business. they are grownup, can decide to have sex with whom they want as long they are also grownup.
Nobody will force you to love someone of the same sex. ok?

i am not bigoted against your opinion, sure you have a perverted opinion, but i am not bigoted, i just recognize your opinion as the perverted nonsense it is.
but i do not want to outlaw your perversion.

I'm pretty sure it's actually that kind of having found a holy truth that needs no other support and is unwavering in the face of any support to the contrary, that makes you a bigot.

OK, I will play your game. How does homosexuality compare to foot fetish?

Mmmmm.... feet. Sorry, I got distracted there. Let's just say I totally understand the prince from Cinderella :p

I think there has been tremendous progress made in gay acceptance in the past 30 or so years, which is the amount of time I can remember fairly well. The notion of a gay couple having rights similar to a married couple was unthinkable back then. Now most people are for it and the big haggle is over whether it'll be called "marriage" or instead "civil union." In other words, the substance was been won and the fight is just over the style.

In contrast, I remember when it was fairly shocking for a TV character to *pretend* to be gay. Anyone remember Jack Tripper? I think having one of the most likable TV characters ever associated with a funny, light-hearted, good-souled "gay is okay" TV show did a lot. I may just be saying this because I dislike nasty politics but I think something like Jack Tripper did way more to change attitudes than hard nosed political activism.

I'm a non-believer in God and I'm in the closet on that point WRT my family. If I was gay I doubt I'd feel I had to remain closeted.

There are plenty of high profile anti-gay incidents but I think that is partly a lashing back by an anti-gay side that knows it's losing this battle and will never win it back.

Re. calling something "gay" as a putdown, it's funny but until recently it never even occurred to me that that could be considered anti-gay. I honestly think most people don't associate the word used in that context with homosexuality. But some words stick around regardless of the good-ness or bad-ness of their origin. The word "straight" describes heterosexuals and likely will continue to do so but I suspect it was meant as a perjorative along the lines of "square." That's just life.

How would we know what the Pope plans?

Good one, DC.

It seems to me that pedophilia is a “sexual orientation” in exactly the same way that homosexuality is. Most people are sexually attracted to adults of the opposite sex. A small portion are, instead, attracted to adults of the same sex. Another small portion are attracted to children.

The key difference, of course, being that pedophiles, unlike heterosexuals and homosexuals, can't act on their attraction without victimizing another person.

When I was in high school (71/72 - 74/75), I knew some guys who were gay, but definitely not openly so. If any had "come out", they would likely have been beaten severely. I knew of no lesbians, open or otherwise.

When my kids were in high school (97/98 - 2000/2001), they had many friends who were openly gay or openly lesbian. It seemed to be no big deal to their classmates - just a point of (generally) good-natured kidding. there were openly gay and lesbian couples at their proms.

I call that progress.

worst argument: "the bible says it is an abomination!" I believe the bible also says that about obesity, yet you don't see any psycho ministers starting "God Hates Fatties" web sites.
